"Bombs cannot be put in hold luggage"

Really!

its been done before and I am sure it will be done again

The "bombs" to be assembled on the plane were made of an isotonic drink and another easy to obtain household chemical

No reason why they cant go into checked bagage disguised as a bottle of pop.

Couple of points:

1) Checked luggage IS, I believe screened for explosives, unlike carry on, which is just x-rayed. I think the idea is that a zero hand luggage rule means no luggage not screened for explosives, which makes sense.

2) Although not a regular, I fly in and out of Heathrow a fair bit, e.g. I flew in to T1 last Wednesday, about 3 hours before the regime was implemented (phew!) Only once have we ever had a problem with late luggage (admittedly the cases in question weren't actually in the UK at the time, let alone Heathrow Airport) and every other time it has been bloody quick - much much faster than at Stansted, for example - last week the cases were on the carousel before we got there which if you think about it is pretty impressive. I honestly don't think you can say that adding an hour to your trip is normal at Heathrow - it's an absolutely ******* crap airport, but I don't think that baggage handling is its main shortcoming.

As Eaststander says I personally get ******* sick of fighting for somewhere to stow my coat with the ******** with their mini-suitcases, who fill the lockers purely to save this mythical 1 hour at the other end.

Not trying to pick a fight, incidentally, the best of British if you dop beed to use Heathrow in the current climate - glad we got our flights done last week!

RE: I think hold-baggage gets more stringent checks ....

But I think Farnhams point is :- Shirt, socks undercrackers ect for two days go into cabin bagage. Now not permitted so those small items have to go in hold luggage, 1 extra case to be scanned by baggage handlers for every business traveller, then also handled into cargo hold . Then removed at the other end. Extra time waiting for all. I am not sympathising but I do think that the business lobby will be such that airlines will have to invest in more sophisticated full electronic body scanners, that will allow people walk through facilities. But it will be a while coming, AND it will cost.........

RE: Couple of points:

I never said a zero hand luggage rule wasnt safer - of course it is - but its unfortunately unworkable for business travellers who need laptops and phones

My point is that once you allow the most dangerous stuff back on (laptops and phones!!) you might as well allow on a few clothes too.

glad you had a good experience on the flight with luggage - actually last time I checked bagage I had only a short wait too - but its all too common to be much too long. I have waited over an hour for luggage at Heathrow several times. And of course there are those wonderful occasions when you get your bag 3 days later because it "missed" the flight - a common BA trick if they have more commercially valuable goods and not enough room. happened to my missus last time she flew that one.

Today wasnt too bad - one hour to check in and clear security (as opposed to 30 secs to use quick checkin and anywhere between 5 and 30 mins to clear security) + 20 minute wait at carusel in Munich with todays full on security - but I think I was lucky

All things being equal...

David,

Whenever I have flown (only for holidays), I have always had a case and some hand luggage.

Are you saying that if you just had a piece of hand luggage, the process is (used to be) a lot quicker - and maybe you could check in much closer to flight time?

Obviously you also don't have to wait for your bags at the end of the flight either.

Yep

thats exactly it - checkin at a machine for me with Lufthansa (the airline I use most) takes about a minute with just hand luggage then you head for security. with BA and KLM you could checkin online and print a boarding card so you just head for security.

At the other end you just walk straight out no waiting for a case.

Of course cases do go astray occasionally and get damaged and delayed etc -all of which are certain to happen if you fly a lot.

PS

I regularly catch flights from heathrow on a Monday morning at around 7am -which meant leaving home at around 5

the half hour difference between getting up on a monday at 4:30 or 4am is quite significant especially when you do a days work at the other end

Have you tried wearing 2 or 3 sets of clothes to board the plane?

RE: Yep

I can see how that would be very frustrating.

My friend is returning to Rome on Wednesday morning - so we'll se how she gets on at East Midlands.

Thanks,
Stephen

What about....

Lens solution, cream to stop your skin drying, eyeshades and neck pillow for long haul flights, long socks to alleviate the risk of DVT on long haul flights, book (essential) MP3 player, magazine, camera (PM me ES and I'll tell you why that is essential!)deodorant, fem fresh tissues - if you take them out of the pack they dry up and are worse than useless, anti bacterial hand gel, essentail when you have been eating, toilet etc, flannel, cool you down, mini fn for menopausal flushes,oh sorry, you guys don't get them do you, so that wouldn't be on the agenda....
Lord the list is endless :pff

Is there an approved reading list?

Or can you take any book on board?

BTW, can kids take their Nintendo's on board again?

Lens solution is a good one

When things were at the 'critical' stage, you were allowed to carry with you contact lens cases but no solution.

What is the point in carrying the cases when it cant be used without solution?

I know !

That was a cracker, so I put new soft lenses in for my holiday, put them in the container and then they are worse than useless when I arrive at my destination and have changed from soft to hard lenses.
Bloody hell.

But, I willl arrive safely al being well:pff
