Reev has a new moniker. Very apt too. Chico, like it.

    PS

As you can tell from reading this thread there were many rumours that Glavin was a bad un. There are more too, none of which I'm going to repeat, supposedly explaining why he got out of Glasgow and why his international career was so limited. I have no idea if any of them were true and I don't really care. The fact of the matter is we paid him handsomely to come here and although he was tempted here by the money he grew to love the place and he was a sensational player for Barnsley football club.

The Reev / Chico is a very strange species.
    It exists only to annoy.
You forget about it for a while - and then it just appears & is just as annoying as before.
It's natural habitat is internet forums, as it can't really thrive in the real world.
If it's annoying tendencies surface in real life - it is often met with firstly annoyance, and secondly violence.
The Reev / Chico should be humanely destroyed.

I remember that story too. There were "suspicions" that were surfacing in the Scottish newspapers, allegedly, so Celtic decided to send him south. Their loss, our gain. Phenomenal player.

    Re: PS

There are also a few rumours surronding his departure when he was a coach - but again I'm not going to repeat on here!

Coming to something when The Full Ponty can take the moral high ground on somebody just posting drivel!

Excellent work. Didn't HT get banned for making similar accusations?

    Drivel / Moral Highground

    Oh yes.
I have never taken the moral highground, as it's a bit gay.
My black dog is blacker than your black dog - and if you disagree I'll send my Dad round, and he's bigger than your Dad.

I'm going to PM Gally & have you banned.

That reminds me - I'll have to post everything I've been sent by ***** Adminge over the years.
There are some brilliant lines in there.
My favourites are from Farnham - pure quality.

If you think my pm to Gally was to ask for you banned you are wrong. But as another poster stated Hemsie did get a 7 day ban for posting something on similar lines to what you have written today.

    Re: PS

He was known at the time to be a bit of a rogue. I wasn't really old enough to understand what that entailed. My memories are of an exciting and popular player who certainly had time for the young fans. He didn't set the pitch on fire every time he stepped onto it and likely not the club cad some have made him out to be. I liked Kev's comments following the Lamp Room gig, when he said Ronnie is a modest man, with a very down to earth perspective on his playing career and a certain bemusement of his 'legendary' status.

That is correct. He was subject to a fair bit of abuse by people in Glasgow, although I believe he finished up with no case to answer.

    From a Celtic website

"Glavin became Celtic's record transfer in November 1974 when he signed from Partick Thistle for an £80,000 fee and moved on to Barnsley in June 1979. He experienced a great deal of change in the Celtic set up during his period, when he joined he was playing with McNeill, Johnstone, Brogan and Connelly and when he left he had been alongside Provan, MacLeod, Conroy and McCluskey.

Ronnie was an attacking midfielder with a powerful shot and an eye for goal. In the 1976/77 season he scored a tremendous haul of 26 goals although he was Celtic's recognised penalty kick taker at that time. He won one solitary Scottish cap against Sweden in 1977 and received an injury which sadly prevented him from playing in the Scottish cup final against Rangers. The problems came with the departure of Dalglish in August 1977; Ronnie continued to make the same runs but without Dalglish the supply had stopped and goals became more difficult to come by.

He had personal problems in the spring of 1979 when his sports shop in East Kilbride was destroyed by fire. In recent years Ronnie was in the spotlight again as manager of non league Frickley who experienced a tremendous run in the FA cup a couple of seasons ago. Ronnie Glavin was a popular and successful Celt and the supporters were sorry to see him depart"

Lots of rumours and allegations, but these are facts:

Fact: Ronnie was far and away the best player I have seen in 44 years watching the Reds.

Fact: He stood trial on a charge of arson relating to a sports shop he ran in East Kilbride, but was found not guilty.

Fact: I have met him twice, once socially and once professionally as a reporter and on both occasions he was charming, erudite and modest.

As to the rumours and allegations, think what you will but as far as I am concerned Ronnie was a great player and is a top bloke; I just feel privileged to to have seen him play.
