I'd agree the term asset stripping does not really apply to the owners. They clearly don't want to invest much, if anything, but I don't think they are cashing in. In fact what they are doing here is a complete mystery to me. Little scope for profit, plenty of bad karma at the moment, no connections with the town. I'm truly baffled. Having said that, they have made a mighty balls up, dismantled a decent squad and replaced it with lads not up to the challenge. For business people, they seem short of commercial acumen and disregard that sometimes up front investment is going to be needed to propel the club to the higher level. That might have meant hanging on to Pinnock and Lindsey and foregoing the transfer fee. For all we are compared with Brentford, my recollection is their guy did pump in initial cash.
Ha ha no, it's still got to be accounted for in the year end accounts, under capital disposals. @Red Rain and/or @BFC Dave will confirm this I'm sure
Just because it's not turnover, doesn't mean it's undisclosed. EDIT: whoops, didn't realise there was another page. Didn't meant to repeat what's already been said.
I think a good analogy would be to think as players (or more their contracts) as assets and their worth is amortised or depreciated over the length of contract so that when the contract is up - they can leave freely ie on a bosman - to leave before then another club has to pay a premium for the player to be released from contract. Any profit or loss from said depreciation is shown in the accounts and said profit/loss is so treated
they haven't. they're not making a very good job of running a football club, like, but they're not asset stripping. don't really know why they're involved tbh. they can't be making any money, they're not moving the club forward, they have no affinity with the area and the fans pretty unanimously think they're $hit. i wouldn't be surprised if they're already looking to get shut, behind the scenes.
While all this, and red rain's explanation, makes perfect sense, there are many football clubs that make more money from selling players than they do from TV rights, admission fees sponsorship etc. I would think over the last few years we've been one of them. At what point can you continue to claim to be a pub when that isn't bringing in nearly as much as buying and selling old furniture?
It's true that a pub could conceivably make more money by selling off its furniture than by selling beer, but any money made in that way would be a one-off and would not be profit in the accounting sense. It would be a capital gain, and would be taxed differently. However, if it continued to "buy and sell old furniture", it would then become a trading company (furniture dealer) instead of (or in addition to) a pub, so income from sales of furniture would be turnover and would contribute to profit. I'm not sure how the tax system works for a football club buying and selling players, perhaps @Red Rain can explain? Most football clubs make massive losses on "normal" trading (selling tickets, merchandise, refreshments, programmes etc) but make money on player sales to keep them from running out of money. Therefore they can show a massive loss, but still have money in the bank. Beyond that I'm struggling, and it would be better for an accountant to take over.
Articles of Association my dear fellow Articles of Association (said in a Henry Blofeld kinda way) (And no, not Articles of Association Football)
Whether they've stripped assets or not is not known what is a stone cold fact though is they've acted with complete incompetence in theyre running of a Championship Football club this season and every move they make seem to make things worse not better.. Weakened the squad Weakened the first team coaching staff and lost the good will of the fan base which had been behind them fully at the end of last season. All in all its a bit of a **** show at Oakwell whether they've had the safe away or not.
At one point last season I really did think Conway was enjoying himself watching the games, planning for the future but I think he was just good at pulling the wool over our eyes.
They've stripped a lot of long standing, loyal and passionate fans interest. That's the overwhelming and most worrying bit.
Potts Bradshaw Lyndsey Moore Pinnock. Not got the money to persuade our club captain not to join Stoke. All 6 of those would walk into our team. Which makes them assets.
Of course I meant incognito - I thought, by virtue of my language, that the mole would not be identifiable. I guess some people were with me with that...I guess you weren't. I've been poacher turned gamekeeper in the said profession. I know the possible consequences of course I do.
Be carefull what you wish for.As for this stupid phrase asset stripping, all the players that have gone over the last 3 yrs have left because they wanted to.There are 92 selling clubs ask liverpool for example Torres,Suarez,Cothino etc.Ok the owners plan hasnt worked but 90% of us will be there next august and the other 10 in november if we are doing well.Sometimes small clubs like us are victims of their own success and lose players who want to play at a higher level or bigger club.
