Seems a fair comment to me, so some of the responses are a bit surprising. Personally I think the Police need to take a large portion of the blame as they should have been in control of the situation but the Liverpool fans were also culpable for the tragedy. I don't care what all the inquiries etc say. Common sense says there was the usual mob attitude from the Liverpool fans of the day and that was a cause of the problem.

Reminds me of a Sunderland away game in the mid 90's

The away end at Roker was a section of terracing in one corner, with the first block of seats in the adjacent side stand.
Unfortunately, not expecting much of a turn out they'd given those seats to local schoolkids on a community promotion thing.

We brought over a thousand and that corner terrace would hold about 700.
Everyone was allowed though the turnstile but after 8 or 900 had got onto the terracing and it was clearly unsafe the police blocked the staircase from concourse to terracing to stop more fans who had paid getting into view of the pitch. You can imagine how that went down!

Frantic work was going on in the side stand to clear some extra space and eventually some fans were channeled into this, allowing those in the concourse to get onto the corner terrace.
We were 2-0 down at half time. We scored early in the second half and midway through John Pearson (I think) scored an 'equaliser' that was ruled out by a late flag. During the celebrations between ball hitting net and realisation dawning, I had moved some 10-15 yards from the bloke I'd gone to the game with and I saw him at one point in the melee, red faced, shaking his head with terrified expression, trying to push himself up on his neighbours shoulder and grasping for breath.

That freezeframe always stuck with me and when we left Roker we both reckoned if that goal had gone in before they'd got the side stand open we'd have been fvcked.
