Why didn't you just say its because she's a woman. Here am I thinking we were having a grown up conversation. I'll leave you to it.
The misogynist dinosaurs looking like absolute idiots in this thread. I can't remember any of them slating Martin Keown, Alan Shearer, Lee Dixon or any of the others despite them offering far less tactical insight
I think it’s valid to ask why there are so many women working on the men’s World Cup who play in a sport where up until recently barely anyone took any notice of it. They only normally get decent crowds for league football if the tickets are on offer & the standard in comparison to the men’s game is shocking with very little depth beyond a small pool of nations. Yet for a male pundit to get a gig at the World Cup they have to have played at the top level & represented their country. For example, you wouldn’t get one of the quality pundits you get covering the EFL for sky sports working for BBC or ITV during the World Cup as they aren’t seen as a big enough name. Even though they might have spent the majority of their career playing in front of 20,000 gates in the second tier they’d never get a sniff of the big job. I’d take David Prutton over any of the female analysts (& several of the male) I’ve seen at the World Cup but we all know he’d never get a chance because the same rules don’t apply. It certainly seems like a box ticking exercise rather than picking people because they’re quality pundits (even though some are decent)
Itv female pundits: Karen carney. 144 England caps. 12 trophies. England hall of fame inductee. Eni Aluko: 102 caps, 3 world cups, played for Chelsea amongst others. Nadia Nadim. 103 international caps, 38 international goals, man city. Psg. BBC pundits: Alex Scott. 140 caps. 5 premier league titles. Laura George's. 188 caps. 2 times champions league winner. I hate these box ticking exercises where the men had to represent their country but the women only had to represent them 677 times between 5 players.
If pundits provided their input with their identity and gender masked I think the female pundits would come out a lot better than the men.
Sorry pal but that’s where your argument falls down, no problem with the pundit being a woman so long as I think they are good at it.....for instance I think Sue Smith and Eni Aluko are both very good judges when assessing the game
I’ve just put above how the standards are incomparable. I know they’ve played for their country but the competition & quality is lacking. A male player who’s spent his career playing in the championship will have played a far better standard of football than any of the female pundits yet he’d never get to do punditry in a World Cup game. If it’s not box ticking then why do you never get more than one woman in a studio covering a game? Surely you could have two female analysts together? And why do they not do the massive games? ITV’s big game was the Argies yesterday & there’s no female pundit. BBC’s big game was France & there’s no female pundit. Do the bosses at these companies actually care about having women on or is it just a token gesture to avoid criticism by saying ‘but we had a woman analysing Denmark - Tunisia’. I’ve not got an issue with women doing punditry I just think it’s harsh on a lot of excellent male pundits who’ve been doing the job for many years that would never get the opportunity ahead of the established male names yet female players can do the job two minutes & get to cover huge World Cup games.
Some good points there mate and I agree.......I think some people just refuse to admit that “box ticking” takes place in life and then have a go at folk who suggest it does
Doesn't the fact that they didn't have any female pundits at those games suggest that it isn't a box ticking exercise? If it was then they'd have a woman there to tick the box. May I ask why Jermaine Jenas is there? A grand total of 116 minutes for England in competitive matches (which to put into context is less than Richard kell played for us and he had a broken leg) and who's only trophy was the Carling cup. That's one up from Harry Chapman winning the Johnstone's paint trophy with us.
You’re not allowed to dislike Souness now. He’s swimming the channel, BBC Breakfast have beatified him, he’ll be made a full saint by the Daily Heil at the Pride of Britain awards.
While we are on pundits, can we take a moment to reflect on Jeff Stelling retiring, broadcasting legend, him and Kammy, what a pair!!
One of best pundits around for me, well done also Graeme for taking on this challenge at 70 years old….good luck
