How's that work? Surely ten bob in the gas.meter or 2 minutes of 2,500 volts has got to be cheaper than paying for food and HMP lodgings for 40+ years
That's what I was comparing the court cases to a death penalty case with a case where a person gets a life sentence which is also a large fee in court cases. And even after that a prisoner can appeal like rugby's killers have that costs the tax payer even more. So in reality it isn't cheaper to keep them in jail.
Spending the rest of your life behind bars is a deterrent for people, regardless of Xboxes and all that crap, you'd soon get bored of not being free. Death for many isn't, hence that's why a lot turn the gun on themselves after killing others. I'd rather die than spend 30, 40 plus years in prison.
He could try all he wanted but she weren’t getting out choose what , and him trying was a cruelty to her giving her hope where there was no hope , not that I had any sympathy btw.
When it comes to the death penalty, why do we always use "painful" methods of execution. If the aim was to inflict death, then surely a ketamine or morphine overdose would achieve the same result without any of the expensive extras (electric chair, etc). Which makes it seem that many who support it are just sadists.
Each to their own I think our justice system is pretty soft in general. But when you look at someone like Huntley who shouldn't be breathing the same air as us. If he done that to my child I would never be able to forgive him and would want him ended. The thought of him anywhere near a xbox or pool table makes me sick. But that's just me I get everyone is different.
What a load of absolute b****s that woman talks. Full burden of proof. You'd have thought they'd have demanded that to lock someone up for thirty years to life but apparently not in numerous instances. So actually it's "well....we're pretty sure they did it". However, to hang em "oh, well that's different, we absolutely have to be 100% sure no takesy backsies". F*****ing moronic. As usual Hislop is bang on. And as usual if you take your moral compass from Ian Hislop or Stephen Fry you won't go far wrong.
What about the innocent people who will inevitably be executed? Are they acceptable collateral damage to satisfy the desire for revenge?
Well that's another con I'm on the fence I can see the arguments for and against but like I said for me rigbys killers, Huntley, Roy whiting etc where there is 100% evidence they have done the crimes I'm not sure deserve to be alive.
Having the possibility of the death sentence makes all cases with that as a possibility more expensive though. Again from Amnesty the annual cost of a system in California without the death penalty would be $11 million. With the death penalty it's $137 million. (these numbers from 2008, so again all will be higher now)
I suppose nowadays with scientific evidence and advanced technology the chances of been sentenced for a murder you didn't commit is very rare intact you probably have more chance of winning the euro millions 2 weeks in a row.
And a police force you can trust to collect and present all the scientific evidence correctly? Like the Met for instance?
O.J. Simpson Not guilty. Criminal case. Guilty. Civil case. Fined $33m. but not imprisoned. . Refused an appeal.
