And that doesn't change the fact that he did little or nothing for us, in his last 18+ months. For whatever reason he became a passenger up front and thats a shame.
I enjoyed his loyalty but last 18 months weren't very impresive from him. 1st goal in 8 games for Luton.
Not even close to being "best striker in famous red". There are far more 'ex reds' who on their day got my pulse racing. Ward, Dyer, Banks and Barnard ( the latter two particularly who scored a few absolute screamers in their time including Barnard's volley against Huddersfield which was one of the best hits I have ever seen) to name just 4. Sadly Cauley's legacy was, IMO, tarnished by his last two lacklustre seasons.
How can you mention “pulse racing” and not name a certain Adam Hammill?! Cauley isn’t the type of player to get pulse racing, more of just an old fashioned goal scorer. I’ll admit, his last 18 months didn’t wield the goal return all of us would’ve wanted but I’ll still stand by, through recency bias, that he’s the best goal scoring striker I’ve seen for us in my just under 20 years of watching us. He’s not high up on our all time list of top scorers for nothing after all…
All I will remember from the end of his time with us was literally trying to shoot no matter if it was on or not and then pulling his shorts up from the front whenever something didn’t go to plan. Which was the majority of his last 12 months with us.
I was very excited when we signed him, others were sceptical. I thought he was great for the first couple of seasons then for whatever reason he wasn’t - I can only go off what I saw, in the end his good to bad games tipped the wrong way- we can argue until the cows come as to why that happened or what exactly changed, but he wasn’t the player at the end of his time with us that he was at the beginning.
Always gave 100% for the cause. First 2 years were his best, but played a deeper role OK under Ishmael & still stepped up with the odd goal & took the pens. We had no choice but to move him on when we were relegated. I wish him all the best & hope he can stay fit & refind some fomr at Luton alongside Morris, who for me was the bigger loss of the two.
I did not mention Hammill along with a number of others because I was no longer able to come to Oakwell having moved to where we now live. I have no doubt that he was that sort of player Who could create things from nothing and raised expectations whenever he got the ball. Not criticising Cauley but he seemed the type of player that was better at finishing chances that were presented to him rather than creating them. In the last two seasons that became obvious when he received little service and the goals dried up.
