a good read... .....not usually a Guardian reader but that was pretty spot on as far as I'm concerned. Made me laugh that the BNP leaflet that came through my door had Churchill on it....they forgot to mention that their forefathers the black shirts were on the other side and that some more extreme and longstanding BNP’ers collect Hitler memorabilia and go on WWII re-enactments (in nazi unifom) etc....
It seems to overlook an important point Many people these days do not see or evaluate poor publishing techniques. You only have to take a casual look at what people read these days to realise that.
AndI agree, in some ways he has been as generalistic as manyconverse articles that are severely criticised for their sweeping assertions.
Grievances and percieved fears and concerns must be addressed and seen to be dealt with. They cannot just be dismissed as selfish nationalism.

RE: To link WWII veterans to anti BNP rallies. "He did fight to allow people to vote, and to vote for whoever they want to. Even the BNP if they choose to." I think that point is totally overlooked whenever the BNP are mentioned. We live in a Democracy so people can vote for whomever they like. That is what we all champion as being great about our system. But as soon as there is an option that doesn't fit with our usual way of thinking anybody who votes/supports that in anyway are just branded as racists and thugs and calls to ban them from some. Would that really make it a democracy? You can vote for who you like as long as we say they are ok to vote for. If they 'get in' it will be because a majority of voters voted for them. Nothing sinister, just a democracy at work. You could start a party off with a policy of relocating the UK to the moon if you wanted, anybody can bring any idea to the democratic table. Personally I won't be voting BNP as I don't think they have any real policies away from immigration so think they would be pretty useless, but I won't be judging people who do either.
Oh the irony! http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/bnps-british-builders-are-american-1686785.html Well, they're white Americans, so they look ok!
Who has stopped anyone trying to vote BNP? Nobody. The idea of an anti-BNP rally is 1. to encourage anyone that doesn't agree with their policies to make sure that they use their vote, for any other party, in order to ensure that the BNP doesn't gain any representation. Which is actually about making democracy work...i.e. encouraging people to vote. 2. To ensure that anyone that is considering voting for the BNP is aware of what they stand for before they vote for them.
RE: Who has stopped anyone trying to vote BNP? We are agreeing on most points then, about a Democracy. But those anti-BNP ralliers don't get branded as anything for doing their rightful thing though do they? It's almost considered criminal by some commentators to exercise your right of voting BNP. That is what is wrong.
