Every time an animal dies it gives me us such a thrill. Everyone in this thread reaches climax immediately, especially if its an extra painful one.

Bonus points if we win money betting on which animal is first to die.

Now, I'm off fox hunting and badger baiting. Hopefully I get to eat the sinew of each one I kill.

 

Typically tricky day yesterday. Today possibly even trickier. I can give a chance to several in all of the races. The only one I'm backing is Lossiemouth (1.30). Not an exciting price, but she is a worthy favourite, top on ratings, and Townend's pick over her biggest rival (who's jumping may be an issue). I'm content to see how the other races play out on a fascinating, and very competitive day.

It could be a good day for Townend. Then again it could be shocking in equal measure. He's on fancied horses with all his mounts for a trainer who has been publicly critical of him in the past.

 

The Gold Cup's a cracker. Gallopin des Champs would be unbeaten over fences but for a slippery patch of ground in the 3m novice chase last year. Two wins in open (Grade One) company this year by 13 lengths and 8 lengths. Trained by the master of Cheltenham. But opposed by two previous Gold Cup winners in Minella Indo and A Plus Tard (another potential fairytale if he returns to his best). Add in Bravemansgame, who won the King George impressively, and in the manner of a stayer. Then there's the enigma of Ahoy Senor, of whom we may not yet have seen the best. Nor do I think you could totally discount Grand National winner Noble Yeats or Bet365 (Haydock) Chase winner Protektorat. Gallopin is the likeliest winner for me, but I can't back him at 6/4 in such a competitive race as this. One to sit back and enjoy!

 

I agree. Never fancied as many horses in one race.

 

I remember Ruby being critical of him in the mares' hurdle three years ago when he let Rachael Blackmore up his inside (steady Dawson, steady man!)

 

If I were Mullins I'd bring in Jack Kennedy when he's fit. I don't know what it is with Townend but he never gives you the feeling he's going to reel off a four or five timer even if he's on 5 4/9 shots. The morning headline will be which one can we get beat.

He reminds me of Rob Havlin. He rides for one of the best flat trainers in the world in Gosden. All the two year olds, three year olds and better older horses in the second meeting after Frankie gets the leg up. To cut a long story short Havlin should be a lot closer to being Champion jockey than he currently is.

 

No ta. Bit brutal that compared to an 8 stone person with foam whip being limited how many times they can use it on a half ton animal. This isn't "the good old days" of leather whips you can use as often as you like when Piggott and Eddery were in their prime.

As usual competitive racing so I'll be doing a market check and doing each ways/place bets if I think there's value in the price. I suspect Bravemansgame will fall, come nowhere or run out though as that's what happens when I back Nicholls horses. Will the Irish have a stormer on St. Patrick's day? p.s. I agree with some of the comments re: Townend - I also think he's not the best. Competent of course but not the best

 

Lossiemouth in first and Bravemansgame in Gold Cup are my bets.
As stated, just enjoy the other races… it’s been an absolutely memorable meeting

 

He’s been about a long time and keeps getting his 30/40 winners at a good success rate.
It’s right what you say but he’s obviously been content being second fiddle… a bit like Dunc Ferguson or Brian Kidd etc

For somebody who “doesn’t beat himself up for having an occasional bit of dairy”, you aren’t half giving the militant vegan a good showing this week.

We’ve heard your view. We know what you think.

I’m not sure you need to sit atop your moral high horse and dig out everybody who has an interest in racing at regular intervals. You don’t like horse racing. You think it cruel. Fine.

Tell us your opinion, and then don’t get involved in horse racing threads.

It’s a very similar conversation to that we have with some posters re politics threads etc, they spend ages posting posts on politics threads about how we shouldn’t have politics threads, as they’re not interested in them and we should talk about football. It’s possible to just leave that thread that isn’t for you alone.

I applaud your morals Mr C. I could and will never be vegan. I fully understand why you are and what influences people to choose to be.

However veganism has to me become a bit like organised religion; everyone who is a (vegan, Muslim, Jehovah’s Witness, Roman Catholic, Scientologist, insert what you like) seems to be right, everyone else is wrong, and as a (insert whatever), far too many assume to be morally superior and assert this at each given opportunity. I don’t accuse you of going this far - but it is dangerously close.

For the rest of my life I will eat meat, eggs, drink milk, have a bet on the odd horse and believe in no god or higher being. I will respect anyone who does differently. I won’t judge myself to be better nor worse than anyone else for that choice and I won’t criticise anyone who follows a particular belief or set of values that I don’t follow myself.

It takes all sorts. Different strokes for different folks. There’s more than one way to swing a cat. Insert whichever cliche you like. You don’t need to sit in judgement of everyone that doesn’t see things like you do. What you see as a black and white issue can be all shades of grey to your neighbour.

 

Being a vegan is like being in a cult, just weird, there’s a bloke at work who’s vegan & it’s just strange. & Horse racing is ****.

 

Hiddenvalley Lake is the best bet of the day in the 2.50.
