Nice to make you're acquaintance Phil one of my ever away trips Sealand Road a grand day out as I got chippy tea off me dad on the way home. Can't remember much of the game other than we won narrowly. Should be an interesting game. We are a young team that blows hot and cold so if you catch us on a bad day you will have a decent chance of success though on one of our good days we will score a few. Not sure if we represent a glamour tie sure you would have rather had us at home where I would have fancied your chances a bit more. Suspect the crowd will be around 7/8,000 and that it'll be relatively cheap though more expensive than your Southend trip.
I am made up with the away draw, more cash than a home match. Lots of chatter about people coming over who haven't been to matches before, suspect this one will be a massive away following (in our terms )
My son went to Chester University. In fact, the house he stayed in for the first year was on Sealand Road the site of your old ground. He loved the area so much he decided to live there. My family love the city, too.
I'm not certain as I've obviously never sat in our away end but I think we always charge the same prices for both teams? Someone might be able to correct me on that though.
Welcome to the forum and hopefully you stick around even after our game has long gone We've never played eachother in my lifetime so i'm very pleased with the draw and having a chance to put that right. So we beat you in the first round in the 1980-81 season and went on to make the 5th round. I'd take making the last 16 again.
You have history at Oakwell. I was there on 5th December 1964 when you were in the old Fourth Division and we were struggling in the Third. Johnny Byrne gave us a first half lead with a header, but you equalised. 1-1 at half time. Straight after half time, Roy Senior scored left-footed from the right wing and we all thought we were coasting into round three. It was then that the fun started! You laid siege to our goal and scored four times to run out winners by 5 goals to 2. 6674 was the crowd and it could be similar this time. Mike Metcalfe scored a hat trick for Chester that day, although the prolific scorer was Gary Talbot, who did not manage one of the five. That season, all five of your forwards got into double figures of league goals - Jimmy Humes (later played for us), Mike Metcalfe, Gary Talbot, Hugh Ryden and Elfed Morris, if I recall correctly. Peter Hauser was player-manager for you and the half back line of Hauser, Butler and Durie was as key as the five prolific forwards. The forwards had a way of laying siege to the penalty area which was extraordinary. The wingers closed in tight and the other three just made a thorough nuisance of themselves. You got the plumb draw for round three, away at Manchester United and had the temerity to take the lead. I recall David Coleman saying, "Wofff! Just listen to this. Chester one Manchester United nil. Jimmy Humes has given the underdogs the lead. It did not last, as Denis Law got at least one of the goals in United's 2-1 narrow win, but you sure gave them a fright. I met John Butler in later life, when he di some coaching for a team for which I played. He was your centre half. He became a dairy farmer near Sutton Coldfield in the Midlands and even turned out for us two, or three times. Great bloke! Great team! Surely it can't happen twice - can it????
Another blue looking forward to a new ground and much closer than Sarrrfend...daughter in tow and a direct train. Praying for Saturday game and hoping for a great performance. Hope to get a glimpse of the legendary Dickie Bird too.....
Dickie has a season ticket , should expect him to be there . Our bigger celebrity Norman Rimmington should hopefully be fit to attend too
Should be a good day if you bring that many. As has already been mentioned, you could probably have up to 6,000 if you could flog them! I worked as a nurse in Liverpool in the late 80s and early 90s and a mate of mine when we were students was a Chester fan. We were working on the same ward and had an old bloke on the ward who was also a Chester fan. We had just signed Stuart Rimmer and this old boy swore blind that Rimmer was a much better young player than Ian Rush was for you. Sadly Rimmer flopped at Oakwell and then, quite a few years later, Rushy came in to coach our strikers during what was one of the biggest goal droughts we've ever had, so it's safe to say that you saw much better out of both of them than we did! Chester did, however, breed one of the greatest players we ever had in Paul Futcher. He was a joy to watch, even if he occasionally had sudden rushes of blood to the head. I'll wear my Futcher t-shirt in tribute to the great man for the Cup game. People say that Steve Bruce was the best uncapped centre back the country has produced, but we know better!
Last time i remember us playing Plymouth in the FA cup was around 1994 Drew 2:2, won the replay. Me and my sis had a night in Bristol on the way home. That's over 20 years ago, god I feel old.
Both the 2-1 away win in the FA Cup 1st Round and 2-2 draw in the league, when Ronnie Glavin scored a last minute back heeled equaliser, were in the 1980/81 promotion winning season under Norman Hunter.
Tags and a Payton lob in the away tie, scrapping like hell in the side stand after a Barnsley lad ran in and tried to take their whole stand on.
Burton fans put a request in asking if they could order their tickets online through our website like the home fans, maybe they will do that for yourselves.
