Yes, but a central tenet of your thread is belittling the size of the UK on the world stage. And I'm pointing out that that isn't right. Which potentially in turn then weighs against your other point which is that we're not a central decision maker and Blair was solely in the pocket of Bush. We're not very good at football though, you're right about that.
We have just stepped away from one of the most significant tables at which decisions are made at. There are rising economic powers in Asia, South America and even Africa is moving at last. In absolute economic terms we are slipping behind day by day. When I work outside the Europe, people generally don’t regard the UK at all. They don’t understand why we have a monarchy. The people I meet don’t think we are a global power. One of very few thing we are good at on a world level is science. And the scientific community is united that Brexit is the biggest disaster ever to hit British science. Not my words but Paul Nurse
I work occasionally on international research projects. Again the people I come into contact with see the UK in itself as a small to medium sized player whose influence is primarily through the EU. Whilst we may not see ourselves as others see us. It's good to be aware of how those with no axe to grind see us.
Would that be the table that forces companies to buy trains from abroad cos its the ' lowest tender' rather than support industries in their own sovereign lands. Or restricts goverment from supportting national heavy manufactuering cos it interfers with their rules. Or the table when merkel barks an order you jump to attention? That kind of thing?
