Its got to be said that whoever is in charge of the mascots at oakwell seems to do a cracking job. I must have seen over 20 stories from parents or kids saying that they (or their child) had been mascots and had been treated really well and really enjoyed the day. I don't remember seeing one person who had had a bad experience.
The Wednesday fans I know are green with envy First the free ST for U11s (launched at BFC when Owls were putting their prices up), then the Mascot thing. They don't have the chance to get their kids as mascots at Hillsbro because "you either have to pay a fortune, or know someone at the club" (her words). BFC does a fantastic job for its Junior fans. Thing is - it is so easy for players etc to create a lasting impression with young fans - and they do - the club has got it spot on as far as I'm concerned. My kids are still full of it. Costs the club nothing, and generates a fantastic feel good factor.
Good to hear. Were they normal mascots or executive? And is there any difference in the way theyre treated other than getting a kit?
Out of interest Is there any reason why every season ticket holder, when buying their ticket, couldn't just get a free child's ticket as well in order to a) get extra space and b) secure entitlement to an additional ticket for big matches? Is it done purely on trust (an approach that usually penalises the trustworthy)? Not in any way suggesting people do this, just curious.
My two were just normal mascots. The only difference as far as I can see is that with the executive package the kids get their kit supplied, and they also get a meal in the exec box, and get to watch the match up there/ be in there for the post match interviews/ presentations. Other than that all mascots were allowed same access to changing rooms to meet players/ get autographs etc. There wasn't much point in us going for the Exec package, as my kids already had Season Tickets and kits, and had been in the Exec on another occasion.
There is something to stop that happening ... if you don't have a child (or a child's ID). The club do require ID for the child you are getting a ST for. Suppose it is open to abuse though. I was once asked by a Sheff Utd fan if I would let her have my kids ID to enable her to buy a cheap seat at Bramall Lane so that she could keep the seat next to her open for occasions when her family wanted to upgrade it to an adult ticket. I told her that no child of mine would ever own a SUFC season ticket! Or words to that effect.
The main point for me is that if they allow this to happen then what is to stop say 9000 season ticket holders getting a free childs ticket, just in case. 18000 seats taken up, not many matchday tickets to sell for league games. I might get one next season, why not, it's free, then I can ensure I can get extra tickets in the cups. We might not sell out this time (league cup not a big attraction and on Sky), but what if we draw Chelsea at home in the 5th round of the FA Cup, or for play off tickets (wishful thinking)? People who don't hold a ST should have to wait for their category to buy a ticket. If you don't fit the categories you don't get one. I am not normally a whinger but this one does bug me a bit.
The exec mascots also get to meet the man of the match after the game and have their photos taken etc.
RE: It's trust board member Laurie Handley Real club man!! I was a mascot in late 80s. Sure he was knocking about then too!
He is indeed He worked there when I did in 1985/6; he was there when I got engaged in the centre circle in 1998; and he was there on Saturday. Norman Rimmington and Ada aside, you'd struggle to find anyone who's been more involved in BFC. (clap)
