Lies. damned lies and statistics

OK I'm not disputing the point you are trying to put across but

using a statistic such as
Germany (1998) 7,792 Deaths.
United Kingdom (1997) 3599 Deaths

and then saying that says that higher speed limits in Germany are possible to blame is very misleading.

It's a bug bear of mine when a statistic like that is thrown in to an argument without a little more thought.

So just to balance that one up

Population of Germany 82,431,390 (July 2005 est.)
0-14 years: 14.4%

Population of UK 60,441,457 (July 2005 est.)
0-14 years: 17.7%

Whilst that does not entirely explain a death rate on the roads double to that in the UK it does suggest that the potential number of drivers is significantly higher in Germany.

RE: RAC Foundation says Motorways are the most dagerous roads

That's because they're full of arrogant tw*ts who know they're better than the rest of us and lorry drivers who don't give a **** anyway.

RE:Autobahn, au,au,tobahn.

In 2003 an 80mph speed limit was placed on the Berlin to Hamburg Autobahn.
This led to a reduction in traffic related Deaths from 8 to Zero.
That's zero as in none ,no deaths because a speed limit was imposed.

4. Germany is a MUCH bigger country than the UK so...

....all statistics will be impossible to compare, in theory

More congested roads mean more traffic jams, you'll get more accidents in traffic jams but because it's at a low impact there's less likelihood of fatalities.

As you say - it's difficult, if not impossible, to draw comparisons

Wasn't one of the reasons for the high rate in France something to do with traffic having right of way to emerge from side roads onto main roads which confused foriegn visitors just a little? I believe they've since got rid of that.

No such thing as total safety when driving a car. At the end of the day, your pulling the strings but it is a machine.

Have a puncture or hit summert at a tonne or over then goodbye. Bit slower and yer might stand a better chance of being picked up rather than scraped up.

RE: clear open road

You're still entrusting your life to four or two (even worse) small pieces of rubber.

I regard driving at such high speeds (which in this country is illegal anyway) as completely foolish, as well as ignorant towards the safety of other motorists and road users.
