I think it would be impossible to get elected president of the USA....... without the backing of serious money men, and those money men will, sure as eggs is eggs want something in return now Obama is elected, back scratching on a grand scale.
Apparently it was about half of the $650m, a sum which is apparently a record. $190m of that apparently went on media advertising. Democracy is an expensive business.
You need to edit this Acky You didn't say 'apparently' enough and you've not said it at all in the last sentence.
RE: Please correct me if I'm wrong McCain decided on Public funding , but Obama turned that down as he knew he some big players behind him
RE: "Democracy is an expensive business." It shouldn't be though, or at least it shouldn't be the case that the candidate who raises the most money always wins. Democracy in the US has been reduced to two main parties and this, for the health of a system that should have a multitude of ideas can never be a good thing. The sad thing is there is no attempt to fix it, and there won't be as it suits the only two parties involved to maintain the status quo. As someone once said, "The US election and democracy itself has been reduced down to nothing more than an auction, and the highest bidder always wins".
RE: No it's me that stands corrected, the Afghanistan campaign will continue..... They will be out within 2 years , and havent we almost left Iraq anyway.
The Iraq Government want us all to leave as well , it doesn't help their cause to unite the people having us there.
Like I said , It was a big election promise , so I think he has to deliver on it.
As for the amount of troops who have died, I think the Yanks would still be in Vietnam if that was the criteria for deciding when to leave.

RE: "Democracy is an expensive business." The American system is a strange one , but then again I am sure they think a lot of the other systems are.
I think a split in one of the major parties is probably required in order to change anything , but trying to get elected in the US on anything other than a right of centre ticket is next to impossible.
There is still a great fear of Commies, liberals, socialists and anyone who isn't Christian.

A black dude who wants to take the troops out of Iraq has just become president of the USA....
....and you're moaning about how he did it.

RE: "Democracy is an expensive business." It's not that much different here though. Look how long and hard the Green Party went on about green issues and how they were widely rounded upon for many years as being 'a bit mad'. Then as soon as the issue becomes popular, the mainstream parties jump on board and it's almost as if the Green Party and their years of campaigning and idea never existed. Instead we get Cameron hugging huskies and Boris Johnston riding around on his bike. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying the Green Party should be voted for, it's just an observation on the symbiotic rerlationship between the major parties and the media. You can even extend the logic to the Liberal party - who for all the regulations about media having to offer all points of view, barely get a real look in. And why should they when the media is full of Tories and Labour cronies? Manufacturing Consent.
RE: A black dude who wants to take the troops out of Iraq has just become president of the USA.... I'm not moaning at all, im just pointing out some important facts in amongst the media frenzy. I hope he does a far better job than Bush and that he takes the US away from its military industrial complex and looks after its less well off and fortunate as it should do. I hope it gives hope to many people in the US and changes direction, but he will rightly and ultimately be judged on the success of his policies and not the colour of his skin.
Vietnam ? that was just a bloody good hiding,......... no way will the Yanks or us be out of Iraq inside 2 years, promise or no promise.
In that case Acky You should have been supporting McCain who went with public funds limited to $85m I think. Obama was going to until he realised he could raise so much more privately.
