Hi All, On Thursday we had an amazing memorial at the club to honour my Dad, awesomely compèred by Dave Cooper, with Q&As with Gerry Taggart and Andy Rhodes, Barry Murphy and Pat Howard, Adie Moses, Scott Jones and Neil Thompson, with a finish by Danny Wilson. We even had an emotional phone call on the loud speakers from Darren Sheridan. It was an amazing night which brought together lots of my Dads mates and ex colleagues. Other attendees were, Allan Clarke, Steve Agnew, John Hendrie, Alan Hill, Viv Anderson, Colin Walker, George Hampstead, Dennis Priestley, Mick Wadsworth, Paul Cross, Mick Hayselden and many other friends and family. It was a really great night. I am trying to organise a #ClapforEric on the 5th Minute on Saturday to honour his time with BFC. He wore number 5 so it’s the most pertinent number. I will be on the Ponty with my wife and Kids and hopefully his last remaining sister and my cousins. It would be great if you could share for us so we can show my kids and my auntie the love that I know the fans have for my Dad. I already know because I go to every home game and not a game goes by without someone asking me how he was. Thanks as always and much love. The Winstanleys x
WOW!! That must have been some night. A wonderfil tribute to a great man. One of my real boyhood heroes. He will have been looking down smiling that lovely smile when you were all together. Just like he will be when we all stand and applaud him in the 5th minute next week. A terrific idea to pay tribute to a proper BFC legend.
I'd seen some tweets about it last night, sounds like the occasion he deserved. Will be a pleasure to join in the applause , your Dad epitomised Barnsley and the Reds!
For those of us who can't be there it would be nice to see coverage on the club site. I've been supporting Barnsley since the mid sixties and Eric's presence was a constant positive through virtually all of our experience of the club. Along with Norman Rimmington he was one of the true greats of BFC.
Never saw Eric play but was at his testimonial and aware of his influence on our beloved club. Plus his assistance to Danny Wilson in our promotion season will never be forgotten. Everyone who came under his influence says the same. BFC legend and I’ll be clapping in the 5th minute….
I'll be clapping. It'll be a bit quiet, like. After midnight, bit cold and I don't want to wake anybody. But I'll be thinking of Big Eric.
Would it be possible to get the club to put up a picture of him on the scoreboard on 5 minutes to ensure that all the crowd knows what it is about. Some of these events fail a bit when only those involved know what's happening and the rest don't. Just a thought. It's too important to miss.
