My only contribution to this thread is that there's a whole world of difference between stress brought on by financial worries or women troubles and depression; a condition that doesn't discriminate between occupation, gender or social status.
That's a poor reply. Maybe the depression's coming from been unable to play football anymore? Money's not everything
The problem is there are a lot of people playing on it and fakig/exaggerating it and now Ithink we are at a point where doctors and people in general just agree because theyre scared to tell people to grow up.
There are players that suffer from depression while they are still playing..Stan Collymore was one, Robert Enke the German Goalkeeper was another He Commited Suicide..There are others...As someone said earlier,Robin Williams suffered as do lots of Famous, wealthy people as do normal everyday people..Its an Illness, Fishy mate...Can strike anybody at anytime.
People who don't understand depression think it's always 'reactive' i.e. brought on by an event. The real buffoons think it just means that you're a bit pissed off. I periodically suffer from clinical depression, which is due to a chemical imbalance. It's never had anything to do with women, money, work or anything else you can put your finger on. In fact, there's times it's hit when I've been at my happiest, such as shortly after meeting my wife. It's something that has always haunted me, as I know it will return at some point, seemingly deeper, darker and longer to recover from than before. Every 5 years or so my life comes to a standstill for months on end and it's a terrifying time. Even if you can stumble onto the right medication, it doesn't work for several months and often makes you feel worse to start with. I've never come close to taking my life, but I can certainly understand why some people do.
Sounds eerily like my life. Feel reasonably good atm but things go in cycles and the down/dark periods are slowly getting deeper and harder to overcome.
Well, after 21 years working in RAF and Army Psychiatry you could say I feel pretty strongly about this subject. And, the point of a discussion board may be to share opinion and fact and possibly learn a little about life. Fishy, 1 in 4 people will suffer a mental health disorder during their lifetime and whilst I hope that you and your dearest never have such battle, your lack of understanding about mental health is very damaging. This serves to maintain the stigma and prevents people coming forward for treatment. Never judge, never presume.
i can relate to that mate, mine first came on while away with my mates, absolutely no logical reason for it to happen. That was 21 years ago and its been a battle ever since, being told to 'give my head a shake' or 'pull myself together and get some laughing done' is usually spouted by people who are completely ignorant of how depression/anxiety works,,,that is until it happens to them.
I'm not disagreeing in reality to any posts regarding this subject. I can both agree, understand and sympathise with them all. Its an illness that needs more understanding and support. It's one that I can also understand people's 'pull ur socks up' views, diene to the lack of education. It's a difficult one...... but anyone who's still uncertain how to react and understand, read the educated views on ere. It will help.
As someone has has suffered for over 25 years with depression I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy so why you'd want to fake something like this is beyond me
Well I personally know of 6 or 7 people who have faked it or played on it to get time off work. And no of course there are no numbers just like there are no numbers to prove how many people who phone in sick with a cold are faking it. There are a LOT of people who are genuinely suffering with depression but that is what, in my opinion, makes it all the more disgusting that others are playing on this illness for their own selfish gain and devaluing the seriousness of it and in doing so are depriving the genuine people of much needed support from the general public who often, due to the selfish arsewipes faking it, jump to assumptions that it isnt real or that the person off sick with depression is also faking it.
I wouldnt want to. Are you of the opinion that there is nobody out there faking it for their own gain?
It was the liking of plankton petes post basically telling me this doesnt happen and you making your post within minutes of each other that suggested it to be honest.
Didn't say it didn't happen and you need to stop putting words in my mouth - the lot bit I liked - people fake lots of things - my point is I wouldn't wish it upon anyone
I know someone who faked it twice. First time, he didn't wash or shower for a week. Went to the docs with a sob story one best mate had been sent to prison, his wife had left him and and one of his other best mates had been killed as well as some work place bullying stories that were also made up. Got paid in full for over a year. Unfortunately , while he was "sick" his wife did in fact leave him and his best mate did get banged up!! We were all shitting ourselves!!!
