Like Alfie May at Charlton some player's don't come good till there late twenty's Both Glavin and Hignett were both 28 when we got em One of my pet hates about signing young players.. normally your making em good for someone else later on
We've done plenty of that. Rodriguez, Wood, Ugbo, Fletcher, Brownhill, Drinkwater, Kent ...... goes back much further too. I always said our reason for not making progress in the Championship is because we couldn't afford players who'd peaked (understandable) but we never seemed to speculate on those who were mid-journey, career-wise. We carried on getting young talent just starting out - some very good - but other teams were always likely to see the polished article.
Get what you’re saying but the history books look at the number of goals scored, everything else is subjective opinion. In my opinion Gabriel Batistuta was the best striker in Serie A in 1996. He’d got everything. But Guiseppe Signori was top goal scorer even though he was just a poacher. Batistuta was 5th in terms of goals so to anyone looking back on history he was only 5th best that season. Doesn’t matter who he was playing with or what team he was playing for. If Cole fires us to promotion this season and scores 25 goals, in 15 years time he will be looked back as better than anything we have in 2039. And don’t get me wrong it will be rose-tinted nostalgia, but the record books will have him as our highest goal scoring forward and he will be discussed as the best striker we’ve ever had at 3rd tier level.
Worth noting that although Hayes and Dagnall were the top goalscorers overall in the years highlighted, they weren't the top goalscorers in the league, so them being highlighted red doesn't give the full picture.
Ashley Fletcher had his best times at oakwell been poor since he left not sure how he still keeps getting clubs. Most of the players you mention were loans who were decent for us but we could never afford in a million years.
Then there's the other side players who cannot be arsed in there late 20s lita, treacy, turnbull, matt Mills, mido. We have had plenty of those.
I don't even remember us having much of an FA cup run in 06/07 so pretty incredible that Paul Hayes got 5.
The Red and Green highlights just indicate the highest and lowest figures for the Championship, League One and Total columns. For the other columns, I only highlighted the top figures.
I agree, and Batigoal was definitely a better footballer then Signori I was speaking to a Huddersfield fan who was asking about Cole - they were heavily linked with - I told him I thought he was a great League One striker now, in the past he wasn't quite Championship standard, but who's to say now? It depends on the scope to improve and how much he has improved since he was last playing in the Championship. We will find out because I think one way or another he'll be in the Championship next season.
