RE: In McPhail's case I think he'd decided long snce he was off. And if the reports on cardiff's

From what I'd heard Colgan was one of the more reasonable demanders. ( Is that a word ?)

Pure speculation mind, afore anyone gets arsey.

    >I'd rather we f@cking signed some players, rolled up our sleeves, got the town behind us, and said 'let's see about balancing the books by winning something'

A man called Ridsdale is good at that. So good that we nearly went under the other Christmas Eve.

McPhail can go for me. He looked disinterested a lot of the time, always seemed to think he was too good for us anyway. I haven't got time for that. We want players who want to play for their shirt. From all indications Nick Colgan genuinely wanted to play for us, and he did a good job last year. Since Watson took that injury in the prem, we've seen some **** keepers. When you get a decent one, who wants to play for you, you should keep him.

Is it not the case, then, that someone had to stump up around a million pounds due to Ridsdale's amazing fiscal skills?

Who told Ritchie that then ?

Cos a player told me that was the message from ALL the directors etc.

Put me down as a recruit to the worried. Surely Colgan is one to keep. The squad is smaller now and better to spend a bit to keep key performers: quality not quantity etc

that's alright. he's obviously got another job lined up.

    Good luck to him.

    He did okay for us.

Up you get, Scotty, time realise that potential. And let's not buy another keeper. Let's bring another youth onto the bench.

    This is good.

    how do you measure ambition?

by spending money we have not got or by keeping with in the budget and not putting the clubs future at risk!

Mcphail gave us 2 weeks and then went, not blaming him but it is hardly time to build up a squad or bring players in, and from what he said in his interview at cardiff it seems to me his mind was always made up he was going!

When will people face it that we have not got mega money to throw around and that the players could be asking for silly sums, but out of 7 if 2 leave to better teams no doubt, then that is not the disaster that everyone is making it out to be!

    RE: thats odd

I thought the million was a loan that was already going to be given anyway but was then witheld after complaints from other directors that ridsdale wasnt giving them as much info as they wanted. the loan was then given once shepherd took over.

then again i'm probably very wrong

Yes, but, as other posters have stated previously, our gates against clubs like Derby, Sheff Weds, Leeds, Coventry, West Brom, Norwich, Ipswich, Wolves etc will be a different class. There is an opportunity to make more money in this division - sponsorship exposure is much greater, more fans, more chance of a decent cup run, season tickets etc. The business end of the club is shocking - we're trying to tighten our belts and go up at the same time! I was in the club shop last week and I wouldn't buy anything because it's full of crap, and I wanted to spend money! The shirts are made by Jako for f'cks sake (how cheap did last seasons shirt feel?)

We ought to be out banging the drum, getting arses on seats, getting names on season tickets, giving people the reason to believe that Barnsley FC is back to win football matches in the Championship - instead we can't keep a goalkeeper who wants to play for us! The best we can hope for is that nobody wants our out of contract players, because we genuinely believe that it's an open house yard sale and we can't compete to keep what is ours!

B'llocks. We either accept that we're going down right now, spend no money, let the players go and embrace 'solvency' in the first division as a first division club with first division aspirations OR we start making some moves to re-establish ourselves as what we really are - one of the finest Championship sides in the country with a rich heritage of quality football played by quality footballers, watched by a town of dedicated and passionate fans. I believe we can sustain Championship football in Barnsley, but not by letting the players leave.

    BUT Dirk

we are all making assumptions here we do not know what has been offered or what the player wants if he really wanted to stay then if the wages were good enough for him to sign in the first place then they must surely be good enough now, and not matter how much more he gets because he wants to stay!

If we are offering less then i can understand why he might want to go, but that will not be the case otherwise they would have all gone!
