I sometimes make a point of counting this. An opposition keeper at Oakwell last season (it might have been Stoke), held onto the ball for 26 seconds in once instance. The referee asked him to release it twice before he did. The 6 second rule appears to have been abandoned, in favour of a rule where the keeper waits to be prompted by the referee before releasing the ball.
