Don't bother with task manager.. it's crap on Win 98 Run msconfig from a dos prompt (start run msconfig) and look for the macafee programme starting and disable the chuff
RE: reight let me know the following also try this (when you get home) go to a command window type nslookup what happens? What does it say?
be careful!!!!!!! You have got a DNS problem ot an internet connection problem! If you switch your firewall off you will get a virus in seconds.
Update Still knacked! Tried Microsoft last night who referred me to Dell who referred me to their software support who were closed! After a bit of digging I came across the Network option (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network) and checked the TCP/IP settings for the cable modem. Everything is blank which doesn't seem right. DNS Configuration shows DNS disabled, nothing specified if I try to enable. So can anyone with Blueyonder check this for me and let me know what they have in all the tab boxes for the TCP/IP properties - ta! Spoke to Blueyonder again, got a more helpful guy who went through more - including removing that TCP/IP entry and then reinstalling it but didn't work. I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem. Oh - I disabled the firewall (well managed to stop it starting) but still didn't work so it's back on now
Checked my settings and under the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, general tab, the radio buttons 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS sever address automatically' are ticked. I hope this helps, but, I don't know what it means, anyway. :S Oh! ... forgot to say that my modem is connected via LAN/Network.
Thanks for that - seems that's same as mine so need to look elsewhere. My sister is on blueyonder as well so if I still have a problem I'll go round there tonight and check all their settings
To be honest EastStander If you're having so much trouble I'd go for a complete reinstall back to factory settings. Back everything up. Wipe your hard drive and start again.
I dunno if anyone has .... ....suggested this, but try putting an ip in your browswer http://212.58.224.81 will/should load the BBC page. If this works, you have a problem with the firewall. Do other online application such as MSN/OE work? If so, it will be a firewall. Try turning off, or uninstall and then re-install it. TonyT.
RE: I dunno if anyone has .... Tried an IP address last night and it didn't work - though a ping from the command screen did work.
RE: To be honest EastStander Seems rather drastic when I currently only have a fault getting online. Can't backup everything I have on there and I have a fair bit so to just wipe everything would have to be a very last resort. I'm 90% certain that the fault lies with this DNS setting and I've just got a setting wrong/missing on the network options. Plan of action tonight do an ipconfig /all and print off, do the nslookup and print off, make note of my TCP/IP settings go to my sisters and compare all these with hers. If nothing differant I'll uninstall all my McAfee stuff and try again. No luck with that and I'll bring ar lasses PC down and try to set that up for t'internet. Failing that I'll then follow Windy's advice!
RE: Just uninstall your McAfee stuff now http://www.edbott.com/weblog/archives/000127.html This sounds very similar though
RE: Just uninstall your McAfee stuff now Have you tried the obvious stuff such as swapping your modem with your sisters, tried a different pc with the modem?
RE: Just uninstall your McAfee stuff now Can ping an IP so would suggest modem ok. Also I'm working on the theory of what has changed. i.e. problem started with an update of McAfee and a re-install of Windows
So Jay IF I do uninstall McAfee and that is shown to be the culprit - what do you suggest for firewall/anti-virus software? I shall move over to the "free" camp and eat my words!
RE: depends what ip address you tried! It was the one I'd ping'd, not sure what it was - will this BBC one work (providing all ok)
