Single cigs. I used to make three roll ups out of one cig. I've always been a tight basterd.

If you were born in the 60's or before you will remember the great Norman Hunter / Allen Clarke era…. watching Ronnie Glavin, Ian Banks, Mick McCarthy et al …

That & seeing the Undertones at the Top Rank in Sheffield are two pivotal moments in my life.

We used to throw darts in the air - I lost sight of mine and ended up with it stuck in my head - oh those were the days!

It's been going around a while that in various forms and at first I found it funny, until I thought of the millions of babies worldwide who were stillborn, disabled or developmentally impaired because of what their mothers consumed during pregnancy, due to the lack of proper device.

And those who were developmentally impaired due to their exposure to lead at an early age, sold in great quantities in all sorts of products to unsuspecting parents.

And the further millions who died from consuming poisons found around the home.

And the hundreds of millions who died in car accidents or on their bikes because they didn't wear the proper protective equipment or do something as simple as fasten a seat belt.

Or the thousands who died from meningitis from simply sharing a pop bottle (I have personal experience of this. On the day of my presentation for my final year project I was called at 8 am by a public health official and told to go straight to the doctors who was expecting me, where I would be pumped with antibiotics. Two people from the house where I had spent the weekend were in a coma in hospital suffering from bacterial meningitis. My girlfriend and future wife lived in the house, as did her sister and partner. And so began the most terrifying day of my life. I didn't know who had meningitis and who didn't. I didn't know if I'd got it. I raced down the motorway to the hospital where a young woman and a young man, who I knew very well, were covered in a rash, while machines breathed for them. About 12 hours earlier we'd shared bottles of wine and beer. It wasn't my girlfriend, or her sister or her sister's partner. But it was his sister. She survived...)

Sorry for bringing the mood down, and I'm not having a go at you for posting it, not in the slightest, I'm just pointing out that it's completely flawed. The gist is we did all this and we were all alright. No we weren't. Millions of us were, but millions died. Millions of brilliant, amazing people died while still children before they were accountable or responsible for their actions. Wearing seat belts or a helmet, putting child proof locks on cupboards and poisons, educating women about what to put in their bodies while pregnant, not lacing products with unnecessary toxins - these are good things. It's not health and safety gone mad, it's progress. No one of any note grew up to be what they are because of any of those things. They managed it despite those things. But we lost a hell of a lot of good 'uns on the way because, well, some of the things celebrated in that article were ******* nutty.

And what about those of us who were brought up in the 70's in what would now be termed a dysfunctional family -- frequently hungry, sometimes cold, regularly physically hurt. Thankfully government legislation and government agencies nowadays give protection to (most, not all) children in a similar situation.

Mr C. rose tinted spectacles are dangerous things!
