Some lack of reality on this thread.

When some of the public meetings were held (Old No 7, etc) Patrick pointed out that average wages in League One were c. £1,800 per week, but in the Championship, £9K per week. We did not know in advance how we were going to fare in this division. If we had offered Conor et al a long term contract on £1.8K per week they would (rightly) not have signed. If we offered a long term contract on £9K per week they would have bitten our hands off. But if we did the latter and then struggled to survive we are potentially headed for financial difficulties again.

If Conor leaves us for a better offer in the Summer, not a man jack of us can begrudge it after what he's done for us. He deserves his chance to play for a bigger club and/or at a higher level. He owes us nothing. He is, and will remain a club legend. We shall have to rely on our (very successful) policy of identifying latent talent and developing it with the hope of the products serving us as well as Conor has. And that's it.

After the 2 home wins against Derby and QPR in August, I thought to myself this team look too good to go down and we could be in for a decent season. As part of this thinking I had a picture in my mind where on the last home game of the season we are all chanting 'Houri, Houri, Houri, Hourihane' as the players do their lap of honour but effectively this is a chant of goodbye and best wishes as we know he will be moving onto pastures new.

I still think this is the likely outcome but as others have said we have had 3 good years from Conor and this is part of the policy.

Very true - and all because there is not much money at the club.
Which comes down to this, which has been discussed over and over on here - we have a great Chairman who loves the club and he is supported by some excellent directors - but if we can't compete financially then eventually we are going to fall through the trap door again.
For example - we should be investing in these young players such as Armstrong, Kent, Drinkwater, Pearson and Isgrove and putting them on long term contracts.

It's been discussed over and over our limitations. More so to keep expectations realistic.

I only recall yourself clamoring for some super billionaire investor to be honest.

We have turned the ship around considerably let's just be steady and not expect too much.

We all knew the new policy and we can't suddenly want to deviate from that because of some success and a couple of transfers.

Could we not have got around that with clauses?

    Lol. Exactly.

I still remember the day we were lavished with beers in a fans meeting.

I asked a specific question if we had any more players with silly release clauses. He said no.

A week or 2 later Craig Davies release clause was 'activitated'

I chuckle at it now like

What Barnsley should be doing now is signing Sam Morsy on a 3 year contract. This should have been done on the 1st of January. And we should be bringing in new players for them posisions in which the players whom will not sign new contracts play, it int as though were skint like previouse years.

I would read too much into it. Before the season finished hourihane said he wanted to sign a long term contract regardless of how last season finished. Yet he never did. I don't doubt we tried to sign them over the close season. Clearly we didn't or couldn't offer them they wanted.

With the silly money being thrown around nowadays they could very well sign contracts and still go in the summer, what's another £8 million to Palace or Leicester? They won't miss that kind of cash. I suppose it might be in the players' minds that if their future club has to pay a transfer fee there might be less of a signing bonus, but I don't know, I just don't want to be that cynical yet. Sign new contracts, go down as Barnsley legends and fill yer boots in the summer.

Lets hope what he's been part of is too hard to walk away from like it was for Hammill. That and we try to match his ambition. I know in his shoes i'd be looking to see if others (Winnall, Watkins and Scowen) had signed back up and that bids for the rest (Roberts etc) had been knocked back. If you were part of a successful squad but saw for one reason or another it decimated before your eyes I think that would help your decision to want to leave rather than be part of another rebuild job.

What could those fat cnuts do, alright they wear red but they could only play during the Christmas period and there's no room for the sleigh and reindeer in the players car park.
