However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

Now kill all the boys and all the women who have slept with a man. Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves. (Numbers 31:7-18 NLT)

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her. (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

The Vatican revered Hitler and celebrated his birthday yearly.

Then there's all the sexual abuse of children being covered up.

Don't come back at me with the different times thing, it is either universal truth and GOSPEL across time and space or it is not. You cannot pick and choose the bits you want to think are true and say other bits aren't to be taken literally.

"Oh it is a set of guide lines to get have people do good things". If the only thing making you do good things is the fear of eternal damnation, you're not a very good person, so you are either saying that all christians are bad people scared into being good or you are admitting the point is redundant.

I have to admit I did think of the Old Testament and the above 'pearls of wisdom' ... being not so 'moral and lovely'

Just watch Oliver Stones Docu-series "Untold History of the United States", no need to concoct strange tails of aliens, the West has been shaf**d for years by those in power right in front of our eyes. People have publicised these things for years but are largely ignored by the mainstream media.

I mean, if I told you that the USA, specifically the FBI, those with a sworn war on drugs and supposed hater of the Islamic government of Iran had sold guns to Iran and used that money to fund criminal narco-gangs to help overthrow elected governments in central America who were then allow to import their drugs into America, you'd kind of think that was mad craz talk right? All true.

The fact is that you have just picked and chosen things to make a point in exactly the manner you're condemning. I'm not a fan of the Old Testament at all, but I could answer your viewpoint in lots of ways which I don't think I have time or inclination to do, given your mind is very clearly made up.

Most of the things you have chosen are clear reflections of the time and culture they are written in- such as the administrative details of the crimes. The Bible has many different authors and many translations so there is also that. The Bible is also full of contradictions- it depends how you take it- if it's a channeling of God or His direct word. I don't think there are many people who take it literally apart from fundamentalists- obviously the world wasn't created in 7 days. But there are many scientists who don't see the idea of God as being incompatible with evolution, for example. So if you don't take the Bible as literal then it's a matter of interpretation and has been for centuries to all shades. Why is the Church of England accepting of gays and pushing for women bishops if not so?

I am not personally 'religious' but I do see great beauty in many of the ideas of religions such as Christianity and Islam. As I said before there are parts of these texts which are abhorrent but contradicted. I too am troubled by these, but see the Bible as a historical manuscript with hundreds of different interpreting hands

Whats your opinion on 9/11 then after reading? For me there are a lot of things that just don't make sense and have never been properly explained, add that to the US government's own admission that there had been a previous plan to kill US citizens in order to gain support for war and you have to wonder.

I am currently doing a jewish learning class, something i agreed to when i married my now wife.

the Rabbi who runs the class is excellent and as you have said the nothing in the old testiment should be taken as literall.

They are historicall manuscripts and after years of translation things get added or missed so we shouldnt ever take the words literally

The class has been very interesting so far.

' I am not personally 'religious' but I do see great beauty in many of the ideas of religions such as Christianity and Islam.'

But isn't the great beauty in religion simply a reflection of the great beauty within humanity? Religion being an attempt by humans to make sense of the beauty that is inherent within us?

And in terms of the disgusting covering up of abuse, that's exactly the point I'm making- that's people abusing the structure of religion. You could say the same about Football being a destructive force because domestic violence rates and drunkenness go up during the World Cup, the racism and homophobia of players and fans alike or because of the violence of Hooligans acting in the name of their club or country in general. You pitied Spider in that way but you're happy to support football? Of course, because these things are perpetrated by an idiotic, non-representative minority

Sounds like redarmy990 is going to lose the old foreskin doesn't it?

Should have tried to convert her to Christianity instead, less painful.

Link to that Canadian minister for defence's speech.

Short version. But the full interview is on the same page to the right.

I found it interesting. Mainly, because as he says, he's the first politician from all G8 nations to state they are 'here'...

Always baffled me how there was no technology for thousands of years, then all of a sudden from the 20th century onwards it's non stop. Evolution? Or did we (they) get a helping hand?

As I say, not a believer or disbeliever in things like this. I just find it interesting to think, to wonder.

Sadly, I have to agree with you. The attitude of some Jewish people towards black people in Israel is horrendous. Very very short memories.
