I remember meeting you and others pre-match for beers. I remember meticulous planning of trains, hotels, tickets, pubs, curry houses etc for away games. I remember people flying over from Canada, USA, Russia and other places just to watch 90 minutes of football. I remember driving to Cardiff and back in a day in the middle of winter to watch a last minute defeat. It was all so much fun. Sadly, those days are gone, and unlikely to return until these people are gone.
This is a very schoolboy view of how grownups actually behave. I sometimes wonder if some of the posters here have ever had a grownup relationship with a manager or managed others properly. Here’s an alternative view of the situation. The board were impressed with the outcome of last season, but frustrated by the fact that rather than them making a profit, they lost money. So they surmised that a change of tack was required, the problem was, they were completely on the back foot because almost everyone at the club with any expertise had just left. Conway stepped up and once again made a right mess of recruitment, and found a new manager who clearly promised the required outcome. Now they’ve obviously realised the new manager can’t produce the goods, they’re a bit stuck as they don’t want to spend to pay him off as well as buying out the contract of a replacement manager. They’ll be panicking like hell behind the scenes, but it’d be stupid to expect them to admit any of that publicly. I’m not an apologist for them, but if anyone thinks they’ve done all this on purpose, they’re idiots (it’s gonna cost them millions). And let’s remember that there’s a lot of this to be blamed on Ismael, who didn’t just leave, but also removed any support that should have been available to his replacement. The board undervalued the loss of the coach (this will cost them more than the £2m compo they got), and once again put too much faith in Conway as temp CEO. Let’s hope they’ve learned this time. Add in the West Stand though and it’s a catalogue of huge errors. And the lot of them are idiots for not having a modicum of humility.
I’m not fully sure how you see recruitment as messed up though. It’s always 50/50 with players whether it works out. And I believe Benson, Gomes, Honder and Iseka have done pretty well so far. Obi looks decent, and I’ve no idea about Vita tbf - but he has decent pedigree. Obi was also targeted at Xmas too. Staff wise - it’s a nightmare. And I think the Board will have learnt the hard from this. But it was always going to have an impact. Schopp hasn’t worked out, and partly because of lack of staff over summer, but also himself. You can’t win them all - nobody does. However, I agree - no club does this on purpose, as it makes no sense. In regards to sacking Schopp - there’s 2 good reasons why they might not have, yet: 1) Replacement isn’t available just yet. And he is seen to be worth keeping in until someone is confirmed. Martin & Bobby have work to do themselves - you can’t just pull them out. I’d suggest if AM was still here, then it’d be a different story. 2) They want to be seen to give new managers time. And this shouldn’t be underestimated. To attract the best managers we need/can afford, you have to be seen to give reasonable time to each one to implement their plan. I expect the first week of Nov to be the final week for him if we lose against Derby and Hull. That can be viewed by all external parties as reasonable too.
It might be that Conway is hoping that the supporters drive him into resigning from the club to save a few Bob. However i would say he is going to hang on for his compo.
