RE: its not as if they don't have time to practice is it??? Exactly. I've never played much competitive football and never regularly practised taking corners. Yes, you mishit the odd one, everyone does, but I would happlily take on any Barnsley player in a corner taking competition and I bet I'd beat more than'd beat me. Other than that, I'm hopeless, but I know loads of people in the same boat - can take great set pieces - far better than many pros. It used to drive me mad, but now I'm too used to it to bother! Last decent corner taker we had - Barnard - 7 years ago.
With your connections at the Club you could set up a half time challenge. "Hit the zone between the Penalty spot and goal area from a corner". The players on the bench who are always kicking the ball around at half time would be your ideal opponents. It would be a bit more interesting than than "cross bar Challenge" and if you could beat a pro I'd give £20 to Sheffield Childrens Hospital. (respect)
I watched the Grandson playing rugby on Sat morn at every one of there line outs a number was called out, they didnt loose one line out, obvious how training pays off. I know you cant yell out a number but our signal always seems to be both arms in the air, no matter how the ball is delivered.
RE: I watched the Grandson playing rugby on Sat morn It would be nice if we could vary our corners, far post delivery, near post delivery, and penalty spot just for starters.
how hard would it be for them to have half a dozen pre-arranged corners for each half??? so that when they all go up for each corner they know where the balls going to be delivered and what each one of them has to do.
Should it be up to the corner taker to decide?? surely the management should have looked at the opposition before hand, worked out their weaknesses and decided on the best routines to use. Does it take that much organising??? not for a man with badges, surely.

RE: how hard would it be for them to have half a dozen pre-arranged corners for each half??? Corners are all about delivery and it looks like we haven't got a player who can take a corner ala Redfearn.
Oh, and I do agree with you.
Maybe the coaching staff are more concerned about improving other areas of our game.

watching our corners reminds me of my sunday football days in the middle of winter nobody wanted to take the corners because they couldn't lift it out of the mud and everybody stood on the penalty spot and charged in not having a clue where the ball was going to end up.
RE: watching our corners reminds me of my sunday football days in the middle of winter A week last Sunday I saw a goal scored direct from a corner in the Barnsley Sunday Prem.
Boca 1 v Wombwell Main 3.

I bet that wasn't on the top pitch behind stocksbridge sports centre blows like buggery up there in the middle of august let alone in january. british army do all their swamp training up there as well.
I once played against thedeaf school up there and the goalie couldn't get his kicks out of the area because the gale was straight inhis face and theykept going out for corners. I knowI shouldn't laugh, but it was the funniest thing everwatching his ten team mates telling him what a ****** he was in sign language.

RE: I bet that wasn't on the top pitch behind stocksbridge sports centre No it was at Carlton Park.
I know the pitch you mean though, very muddy. Its one of the oldest pitches in the country apparently.
I played for Wombwell Snoker Club v Royal Oak (Deepcar) there 5 or 6 years ago.

RE: watching our corners reminds me of my sunday football days in the middle of winter boca? well done wombwell then!!
Stewart Barrowclough took a decent corner...... and Gordon Owen, Stuart Gray and more recently Darren Barnard.
RE: Stewart Barrowclough took a decent corner...... George Hamstead weren't bad, either, he could drop the ball on big Winnies head, just about every time.

RE: And ... why cant they all play equally well with 2 feet... given that its their only job nt Good point .....
I remember when I was at Kings Road Junior School, the teacher (Mr Hinchcliffe),that looked after the school team, had us practise with our 'wrong' foot and if we dared use our stronger foot, we got a clip round the ear. It paid off, when we played matches.
Don't think that's in coaching manuals these days, the clip round the ear bit, that is.

RE: I bet that wasn't on the top pitch behind stocksbridge sports centre Never had that problem with the old Shipcroft Utd pitch, eh! JC .... the drainage was excellent.
