RE: I thought... Spot on! Through the mid 70's we sold a number of players (Butler, Doyle, Pickering, Otulakowski, Gorry ) for what today seem like very modest amounts but was decent money then. The manager Jim Iley made some astute free transfer signings, (Springett, Joicey) and when he resigned the board were able to splash out on a high profile appointment in Clarke using the money accumulated from these transfers. Big difference is attendances went from 4000 to 12000 within a season. That was when football was affordable though. Also need to remember that most of the players bought by Clarke were either 1st division reserves or lower league players. Exactly the type of players we can afford now.
RE: Well I reckon You are assuming that because we have reduced the wage bill we are better off. Well we were losing £400k last season, any reduction in wages just reduces the losses it dunt automatically mean that we are suddenly making money. When G.S says we are close to break even it dunt mean we are close to debt free it means we are close to matching what comes in to what goes out. The debt is probably still there, but more manageable.
