An amazing set of circumstances enabled us to sign Ronnie and allowed us to keep him during his peak years The stars will never align again to allow us to sign anyone of his calibre
Glavin was before my time. But having spent many hours in his company, and watched a lot of footage, heard testimony from those who were lucky enough to see him, I know how key he is to what this club has achieved in its long and storied history. If DKD can match his impact, we’ll be doing well. As it stands, he reminds me of Chris Dagnall. So that’s where I’m at. Now, some will see that as criticism, but I was a big Daggers fan. And he produced moments at second tier level for us. DKD has similar attributes, similar build etc. I might never have seen Ronnie play in the flesh, but I saw practically every game Craig Hignett played for us and find it hard to imagine I’ll ever clap eyes on a more talented footballer.
Favourite redders, best I've seen was higgy, went to watch Ronnie wi mi dad but I wa 2 young, higgy could just make summat happen constantly,mi dad started going to watch tarn again just to watch higgy.
I never had the pleasure of watching Glavin play, but that air of expectation and excitement definitely happened when Higgy got the ball. An unbelievably talented player in his prime, playing for us. He also proved himself at the highest level, he’d be worth countless millions these days.
Hignet was nearest midfielder we have had to Glavin mate in my eyes. He would get you off ya seat(we nearly all stood up in Glavin days ha). Another who could get crowd off their feet was David Currie, although he was a striker.
Unsung hero in that team. So much so that in the Liverpool replay Souness crocked him before the ball left the centre circle from the kick-off.
Remember a game at Elland Rd? He got the ball in our 6-yard area from a Leeds corner, beat a couple of players, played a 1-2 with David Johnson and scored at the other end. What a player.
DKD will never be a Glavin in fact in my time watching Barnsley nobody as even come close to matching the king. What i do think though is that DKD as a finisher has got a technique which wouldn't be out of place in the Premiership. Before anybody jumps in I'm not saying DKD is Premiership quality and I think his career will be League one and or hopefully the Championship but look at the way he "passes the ball " into the net a quality not many players possess.
I would probably put Hignett in second place, just behind Ronnie, in my time watching the Reds. There were fabulous players from even before my time watching the Reds. Danny Blanchflower must surely stand out as one of those. Some years ago, he was voted the greatest ever Spurs player, ahead of even the great Jimmy Perhaps Hammill could too, when he set off on one of his mazy dribbles.
I asked the question because his finishing is quality he scores goals that are difficult and misses easy ones. I followed Barnsley all over the country in the glavin era he was quality and we will probably never have a team to match that one but I live in hope.
The latter (as I didn’t see RG play) is a good summary tbh, the bulk of his goals are cool composed passes into the far corner…….if that was Palmer, Salah etc they’d be raving even more
Anyone remember his second stint with us? I was so desperate for him to be as good, but apart from a few decent touches he sadly wasn’t the same player.
Yes and it tends to happen a lot when players return to clubs, they don’t quite live up to past glories
I tried to find a mention of that online, but couldn't. All Leeds pages don't mention us at all not even lineups that I could see.
It's on 11v11. We won 2-1, can't remember who scored the other. David Johnson (Everton and England) was on loan, he played 4 games for us and scored once.
