Prefer the older boozers to be honest

Better atmosphere ... not full of young u's tanked up looking for a fight ( not that they all are!) Got some ultra trendy ones -like the news bar - where all lthe footballers drink... go there if it's a big night ...birthdays anniversarys etc

Soz, it wasn't supposed to be an insult.

I thought you quiterevelled inyour positionof BBS grumpy old nit-picker.

I do get it though. I just don't agree that, in the case of pub names which easily can (and often are)changed back, it's worth moaning about.

All the decent pubs, clubs have closed through lack of use

In Barnsley, lack of support for decent family pubs and clubs, support for the 'Head Banging' 'Disco' all night rave ups and alcohol abuse drug using dens have become the norm.

RE: Silkstone in town...

...new Wetherspoons is a decent boozer. Good atmosphere, no loud music, great choice of real ales and cheap too.
An oasis in a desert. What more could you want?

I can't remember a decent boozer in Barnsley town centre ever

apart from the manx :)S) for a few years in the 90's. And that shut because the landlord made a fortune, screwed the breweries, sold his brother down the river and buggered off to Canada.

Simple answer to this one really. The people who would like to go to decent pubs no longer feel able to go out on a night because they are afraid of the local chavs and chavesses (particularly the chavesses these days) giving them a going over. So they stay in, and the vicious circle gets worse - the decent pubs close down as they can't turn a profit, and get taken over and re-fitted as another chav palace - on we go.....

In some of the pubs where I live you are distinctly over age if you are 18.

Right,1952/53/ Me and this scouser chap, were both drivers of heavy goods
Leyland hippos,we worked to gether, and because we were always last in
we got the last patrol 10 till 12,and 4 till 6,a cuppa and backon the road,
Me and Scouse were out not in no mans land, where there mines, and shells flying about.no,in our camp where Mines a Pint,on a good night,
Suddenly Scouse pushes me over, shouts "look out yorky"he shoves one up the spout,i get up,and see 2 lights, well what do get from Fireflies, chasing each other
you can think of any conversation that was passed between us
and you would be right, 60 am arrives, back on the road, fetchin timber for bukers
then ,end of shift arrives,we go out tent, and relax,no problem,
it gets to 9 pm,ish, and i hear scouse say, something like oh Kin hell
its rifle inspection to morrow, ive left my rifle in the truck
of he goes for it and arrives back, sits down, there is 3 or 4 of us in tent ready for lights out, WHEN BANG,Scouse screams,i shotmeself,
he had forgot he put one up the spout, puts it against his foot
and pulls the triger shoots his foot off,the bullet goes under a sleeping taffies mattress
,and soesent wake him up
and that was the last i saw oof Scous,
if i could just find him
im 80 now,he will be near the same
you could say a Barnsley lad Caused the downfall of a scouser
just in case he lives next door Middleton you daft Barsteward

OK

Fair enough about pub names often being changed, I accept that even if I don't particularly like it., just that in this instance the White Hart/Heart bit seemed a bit strange.

Always thought The Fitzwilliam would have made a decent real ale venue, near town but away from the madness,Lamproom Theatre round the corner, council offices near it for early evening trade, new Plaza thingy opening....shame its falling into disrepair
