Re: I remember that, too No. Strikers who scored 20 league goals in a season for Barnsley FC. I didn't realise it was so complicated.
Funny but true. We struggle to even find strikers who can reach double figures for league goals in a season. Be nice to see someone reach 15 league goals nevermind 20.
Andy Payton got 20 think it was 95/96 before we sold him off to huddersfield. Only remember because of an interview Payton did on TV moaning because he went for 300k and Hudds sold Andy Booth for 2m to Wednesday and booth got 21. Think he said something like that extra goal was worth an extra 2m. The arregent ******. Glad we sold him and season after is History we got promoted.
I think that we'll be signing him. Was a bit underwhelmed by the speculation to be honest, his record in front of goal hasn't been much to write home about since he was in league 2 with Huddersfield. Would have prefered Higdon but that seems to be dead too. Id like to see us sign a striker or 2 now, Richard Wood and Ian Evatt would suffice.
Re: In all my years of watching Barnsley Andy Payton mate He also scored a perfect hatrick that season 1 with each foot and a header.
I can remember the hat trick against Grimsby But I didn't think he got 20 league goals that season, mate.
Re: I can remember the hat trick against Grimsby I'm going to sit in the corner, sulk and blame everyone else!
I would be happy with Jon Stead signing. I always find it makes sense to get the opinions of fans who've seen him play regular, and the lads on OTIB (Bristol City forum) speak about him in glowing terms both as a player and a human being. And we all know Flicker likes good human beings. They reckon it's unfair to judge him purely on goals as last season especially he apparently lacked any service or decent partner. But the way they speak about him makes him sound like us talking about COG or Daggers - he works his bag off and is the perfect team player. He's a local lad, too. And would be good competition/cover for COG. I do understand the clamour for a quick and direct forward, but I feel the boy Jennings may be deployed there. . However, I would much rather we got our own players tied up, and then concentrate on a new centre half or two.
I love a work horse mate, but at the minute its looks to me that COG and Daggers are going to be the first choice strikers if we go with 2. Daggers runs his heart out and is a brilliant workhorse, fair enough he got a handful of goals last term but i feel we are missing a jack in the box sort of natural goalscorer to go with COG. Scotland could do that job a few years ago but i feel he's only got a season left in him and won't start many games this season. Someone in the mold of Adam Le Fondre will do for me. Just my opinion like.
Glad it's not just me. Loads seemed to think he'd be a good signing, I never thought that. We need goals.
Re: In all my years of watching Barnsley Was that against Udders in the league cup 2nd leg at oakwell ?
That's true His hat trick was in the League Cup. As far as I'm aware, he scored 17 league goals that season (giving him a total of 20 league AND cup goals). Since I started going in 1968, I still think there's only Mick Butler & Brian Joicey who've scored 20 league goals in a season. Good grief, I'm turning into Whitey & Mr C with my intransigence!
Agree with this - was speaking to my Ipswich mate at work the other day and he was a massive Stead fan and couldn't speak more highly about him from his time there - gave everything for the team, sounds very much like a Flitcroft player to me. Obviously we'd all prefer a 20 goal a season striker, but at the end of the day they are few and far between for our budget and we all saw last season what getting the right group together can do. I'd take Stead over a prima donna like Craig Davies any day.
