To get back to the original my council tax is around £1450 and its shocking what the council spend it on such as a magazine telling us how tough things are for them

And when Houghton said they plaanned to hit the weak first that was outrageous

Absolutely Dave, it is the size of the organisation that is key. Plus the added factor that council's are subject to the ever changing whims of elected Members (a necessary evil of democracy), provide a huge range of diverse and often competing services, and have to be absolutely accountable for everything they do. I spend half my life doing freedom of information requests, most of the time for the same handful of individuals who abuse the privilege.

Is there a better life to be had in the private sector? For some maybe. There's a lot more money but for me that doesnt equate to happiness. I've been offered jobs on significantly more money to try and get companies out of providing the services they are required to. But i genuinely believe in those services and that they make people's lives better. That isn't me being a martyr, its just realising that gives me job satisfaction.

Pay is good in the public sector, but not as good as the private. Of course there is some deadwood, but most of the people I work with really care about what they do and give everything to the job.

Utter rubbish. My edf bill has gone up from £95 a month to £135, for both gas and electricity. I don't smoke and don't have sky. The odd bottle of wine costs me a pound more than it did 5 years ago. You moan about Tory press yet sound like a Tory when moaning about people buying cigs, booze and Sky.

The words of a 'true blue' , bless you xx

When the 'blues' brought in the dash for gas in the early 90's you were not moaning then eh , the promise of cheap electricity and the opportunity to finally crush the coal industry ('enemy within' -Thatcher 1980) we are now paying for that policy , me and you .

Gas is a world commodity that is going to get dearer , scarcer

Good to see that you pay your money into the coffers of the french tho'

**** off Glynn, I'm anything but a Tory. I'm just demolishing your strawman assumptions about people spending money on other things but not moaning about their price increases. Tell that to the old folks who can't afford to heat their homes.

My point about utility companies was more about them having a captive audience driven by the absolute requirement that everybody has for the utility. I wasn't referring to financial waste in the same way that has been seen in councils although I do think some water companies in particular are guilty of wasting money.

Here in NZ where 75% of electricity is generated from wind & hydro we pay about 12p a unit for electricity.

So you're not doing bad in the UK.
