To add to your comments, How successful has right to buy been over the last 40 years? Social housing waiting lists are longer than ever and about 50% of properties bought through right to buy are now in the private rental sector? Wasn’t the objective to use the proceeds of Right to Buy to build new social housing??????
No. Councils weren't allowed to spend the money generated on the sales to build more social housing. That would have been too socialist ( and sensible) a policy. And it's been unsuccessful because there's an acute shortage of affordable housing.
I agree with you that the lack of social housing and affordable housing is a scandal. Round here even affordable housing is unaffordable. I know my memory is going but I seem to recall that part of the argument for Right to Buy was that local authorities (who were responsible for social housing in those days) could use the proceeds to build new social housing. However, this was very quickly curtailed to restrain public expenditure by Thatcher’s government.
Still not had mine from BMBC - wonder if it's cos I only pay on the 25th and they wanted their cash first.
Got mine from Stockport this morning - they've added an extra 10% which I think is only for good looking people.
