Get yourselves to Farmfoods, they sell the same pack for £1.50. Quite like the salt and vinegar batter too though I’ve not seen that for sale for a while. Can’t stand the Young’s ‘fishy on a dishy’ advert though. Refused to buy Young’s for about 10 years because that traumatised me as a kid.

I’ve always liked them since I was a kid, just need to get the light right and standstill, there’s usually an odd crab ( especially if you gently move your fingers through the seaweed on the rocks.) anemones, shrimps small fish , stuff like that

Crab linguine with the freshest crab is delicious.

A lot of parsley, red chilli, lemon, white wine, mix of white and brown crab meat and al dente linguine.

    A thing of beauty.

Despite the lack of success I've always loved rock pooling. Goes back to summer holidays in Scarborough. Loads of rocks in the North Bay out towards Scalby Mills. Accompanied by a handful of Airfix soldiers it was kids heaven.

Brittany and down the Vendee on the Atlantic side are famous for shellfish ( literally translates as fruits of the sea. In 1991 when my daughter was 4 we stayed in a hotel in the Vendee and we asked the Hotel restaurant if the following night (being our last before we drove back to Roscoff for the ferry home ) we could have the fruite de mare. They bought the fish daily from the local fish market depending on what was available and fresh.

The next night they showed us to our table and brought one of those huge round silver trays like you see waiters in Paris carrying above their heads absolutely piled high with shellfish. Crabs, mussels, lobster tails, oysters, prawns, shrimp whelks and sea urchins. I have never seen so much seafood in n place except on a fish stall. My daughter, who we thought might have wanted something else (being only 4) tried everything and actually enjoyed the oysters most of all (she still has expensive tastes.) Seafood has never been cheap but I remember , whilst it was expensive it was nowhere near what I would have expected to pay for what we had. I could see some of the waiting staff at a discrete distance watching to see what we Brits made of it and caught a glimpse of one or two of the kitchen staff taking a peek through the doors too. Whilst it took us a couple of hours to demolish it all, demolish it we did although the table looked like a warzone after we had done. Fortunately I had a bit of experience in dressing crabs, shucking oysters and getting whelks out of their shells but the crabs and oysters were already prepared for us anyway. Only the crab claws required a bit of work with the little hammer and pincers. (I use a nut cracker at home)
Would all probably cost an absolute fortune nowadays. That said we had seafood in Portugal near Lisbon a couple of years ago and it is justified in its reputation for being one of the best places in Europe for seafood. which we love.

    Spike Milligan's army days.
Extract from "Adolf Hitler, My Part In His Downfall".

"...and we had our first case of Crabs. I had no idea what the crabs were. The victim was Sergeant Cusak—he discovered he got them on the eve of a week’s leave. The M.O. told him to apply ‘Blue Unction’. Now blue unction has only one use—to destroy crabs. Knowing this, Sergeant Cusak entered Boots in Piccadilly with a prescription during the rush hour on Friday—it was crowded. He whispered to the assistant, “Can I have some blue unction?” In a voice that could be heard up Regent Street the assistant said “BLUE UNCTION??” Cusak replied twice as loud, “YES, I’VE GOT BLOODY CRABS!”

    Fruits de mer.

    Had that in Harfleur, Normandy.

Prawns, langoustine, oysters, sea snails, mussels, crab, lobster and scallops.

    Yum.
