2 memories I have of futcher that stick out more than most.

The clanger he did against west brom. Cushioned back pass on the volley. Straight past baker and right in the bottom corner. Still chuckle at it now.

And the blistering strike against Everton in the fa cup. only neville could have saved that.

Would walk into any of our teams ever since he left if he was a decent age.

Honourable mention should go out to Kenny Burns.

Not so much at the *** end of his career, but at the ooh, ooh, ouch, turning your fingers nicotine yellow stage of his career...still oozed class for his few games with us.

Sorry folks, it was Winnie for me. Saw his debut in London, and I was totally surprised by the mature performance for such a young player.

To be honest I'm someone who doesn't really think highly of Cranie, mainly due to the fact he was part of that shower that got us relegated last season... But in these pre season games he honestly hasn't looked as bad, I'm thinking maybe he just needed better more reliable defenders around him?

Cranie made one terrible pass which we were lucky to avoid conceding from in the first half. He also engaged in a silly bit of tippy tappy with Nyatanga in the second which nearly handed Wednesday the initiative. Added to that there was again no evidence of any leadership, despite him being captain and the most experienced member of our side. Other than those mistakes he was competent enough, without in any way standing out. He is now the most expensive player we have in terms of wages, so I'm fairly indifferent whether he stays or goes. Big Jean with Lewin would be an interesting pairing, although I grant that the occasional errors will be inevitable. Danny and Ben seemed to half anticipate that there may yet be a bid for him when they spoke on Thursday. I'm afraid I'll be shedding no tears if that's the case.

I do kind of agree orsen. I'm happy for him to stay as I think he'll easily be good enough for L1 but if getting him off the wages is holding back further squad strengthening then I could understand us letting him move. If we could get 500k for him, McLaughlin on loan and play Brown at CB. We could maybe afford GMS then. We can be stronger by letting our 'best' player go.

Phew! I'll bet Cranie's glad you have no personal axe to grind. The mind boggles at what you'd say if you did(!):D:D

I know that probably seems a bit harsh, JLWBL, but honestly these people are getting wages we could only dream of (or that I could - not sure about you!). And it's us that are paying these wages with our support. I don't think Danny's a sentimentalist - as we gleaned from his comments about Sir Bobby on Thursday. So I think we have to be objective - without in any way being nasty or personal. In any case, it's only my view, and I know plenty on here disagree with me!

Only mickey taking, mate, which is why I used the emoticon. If that's your opinion, you go for it. You're entitled to express it. Personally, as you know, my viewpoint is polar opposite to yours about Cranie. But I believe you should be able to air yours. I'm more than happy to let Danny decide what's best for the club & team and to give him my backing.

I like Martin, he's a good player - just wish his quality stretched to marshalling the defence, like Shackell did. I thought he got off very lightly last season, but like the rest of the club - he's playing in League 1 for a reason and Champ clubs will have clocked that much.
He's missing something that just stops him being a very good championship defender. Sp*nk, for want of a better word. I hope he finds it this season, there have been a lot of changes and as the senior pro - there is a lot of responsibility on him. I think he'll do fine, there is a bit more sparkle about him already.

I agree abut Cranie- something of Futcher in the way he sort of strolls into tackles so upright. Class.

I thought the defence as a unit looked solid- filled me with optimism, especially with the movement going forwards and the range of passing.

So good to see after last season, I hope it continues

we seem a lot better defensivly than last season and in midfield not just relying on jennings to create something theres more class all over the pitch just need another good striker and to top it all off some great performances from the kids:D
