Had my card cloned last week 99.99% certain it was the dodgy b*stards at my local Shell garage, some fecker used my card details to top up their O2 mobile credit. What I want to know is how my bank knew the transaction on my card was dodgy, I mean how did they know it wasn't me topping up my mobile? Fair play for spotting it though.
They don't need to have your credit card to clone it. They have ways to generate credit card numbers. They test the numbers against a small internet purchase like web hosting, and if it comes back as a genuine number, then a card is created. Had mine done twice - One of the cards had never left the house. Got it, did a 0% balance transfer and then stored it away. Another card had almost £8K of purchases tried against it. Online dating (it wasn't me honest), web hosting, attempted car purchase. They even tried to pay off a debt online with a debt collection agency. Non of the money was ever taken charged on my account, they were refused by the credit card company. Once had a phone call from the bank, saying that they believed my card had been cloned and asked me to cut mine up while they sent me out a new one. When they ran through the recent transactions, nothing was out of order. When I questioned why they though my card had been cloned, they said that they'd just been given a list of people to ring and send out new cards. Sounded more like a banks laptop had gone missing or an overseas bank call centre scam that had been busted.
You can cut the risk by avoiding using your card at certain garages and restaurants...
...but there's no way to stop the dodgy finance company employees. There are people who'll sell your full details for £50 a go.

A big way for it to happen is if you call somewhere such as your mobile phone operator or a utility company to pay your bill, all details are given and as I have seen a few times in the past (as I was a team manager at Ventura) some advisors WRITE ALL YOUR DETAILS DOWN before puting them in the system!!! they can then, if they want use your card in effect on such things as ebay or to pay on the phone!!
