I think my first Season Ticket was maybe 87/8 and i'm pretty sure it was only £30. I tend to recall attendances being just under 6k or just over depending on any away following boosting it or a decent team or derby. and I think post Taylor, we even dropped below 4k (Southend at home rings a bell being 3k something. And you're right with the attendances. 1996–97 Barnsley F.C. season - Wikipedia Aside from Man City and the blunts, our attendances were pretty poor and it's only really the last 2 games when you looks at it where the ground was nearly full.
The attendances in 1996/7 our promotion year were overall quite poor. If you exclude our 5 win run at the start I don't really think it was promotion form after that. We were very hit and miss right up to the end. I think we look back on that year with very rose tinted specs but if you look closely we really weren't that great, results wise. Attendances even in March and April were only 11/12/13 thousand. If that was this season then I'd expect higher and would be disappointed if it wasn't. 1996–97 Barnsley F.C. season - Wikipedia
72/73 crowds, back in 4th Div , 3 day week and John Bleedin McSeveney until just before Chrimbo. Great times.
I think two things got us up that year...winning the first five and signing Hendrie. If we hadn't won the first five I really don't think we'd have challenged.
