Correct if you’re talking about registered squad. Miles off if you’re talking about Match Day squad. I ask again. Where are these baffling team selections given the players available? If Oduor is your only example then your argument is weak at best. Oduor is playing in the position he was progressed as a teenager to play. Whether he’s good enough is another debate, but he isn’t, and was never going to be, a LWB.
Finished 5th. Then lost the CEO, Club secretary, Head coach, Assistant coach, Sports scientists and other such backroom staff, Captain, vice captain, main goal threat, ever present centre back injured... Then season starts. Strikers brought in from overseas not available, second biggest goal threat gets injured in the second game, backup midfielder from last season is nowhere near ready after injury and sent out on loan, defender that's come into the team this season gets a three match ban, midfielder brought in to replace captain tests positive for Covid. All the while, the most versatile defender we have is injured throughout. People are saying that Schopp is out if his depth, well to be honest, given the circumstances, not sure who wouldn't struggle that is within budget. Jury is out for me, there are some bits that I'd like to see us improve even with the injury list, but he needs to be given time.
What about going back to a 4-4-2? Collins Brittain, Sibbick, Helik, (Vita /Styles) Frieser, Gomes, Palmer, (Styles/Odour) Woodrow, (Iseka/ Cole) That would give us options and play players where they are most comfortable. Frieser's energy could be used and he could back up the forwards when play come's down the left. Likewise Styles/Oduor when play is down the right.
QPR first half suggests there's potential, at times that half we looked superb. Game management let us down that day But I think we have to be patient. Last year was a freak season and understandably it's massively raised expectations, but there's a long way to go and I'm certainly not writing anyone off just yet
Are they comfortable in whatever they are playing at the minute? What are they playing at the minute?
It’s a fair overview of how preparations for this season have gone. Only change I’d make is to say that Morris is our biggest goal threat. I’ve no idea if Schopp will turn out to be a success. He’s got work to do. But the claims and opinions being formed that ignore everything in your post need to be challenged. The reality is we just don’t know because this match day squad would struggle to avoid relegation under any manager.
It’s clearly 3-4-3 still with different tactics and movement to Val within it. You suggested moving to a formation they’re comfortable with. But it’s a formation they haven’t played for two years, a formation we don’t use in the U23’s, and a formation the players from overseas won’t be used to. That’s my point.
4-4-2 is a simple formation that any footballer can play. It's often not used because football has allegedly evolved and it isn't sophisticated enough and too easy for opposition to counter. I'd say it's a good formation for our players because we aren't trying to re-invent the wheel but get results.
Left back.. in the changing room. Shame I like him but he doesn't show any desire or aggression. Similar with Woodrow who doesn't show enough aggression - he needs to improve on his strength and start being a bit more physical instead of just playing for fouls all the time.
I don’t recall many occasions where Oduor started as a forward for Leeds in the Championship. Happy to be proven wrong though. I have no axe to grind against the manager and he certainly had had a difficult start in terms of injuries and availability so knee jerk reactions help no one. At the same time continually picking a player who hasn’t played in that position at this level when his impact has been negligible isn’t helping his cause.
Did he even start for Leeds in the Championship? Meaning he didn't start at LB or LWB either? I can't see many supporters disagreeing that his best attributes or attacking ones vs. defensive ones. Considering the option off the bench is Big Vic with Cole not being 100% fit, it's just not as baffling a selection as people are making out.
What's wrong with putting Vic up front? It's his natural position, he can put himself about, and for all his faults he's (IMHO) a better finisher than Odour. Playing Odour up front is utterly bonkers and, so far, has only worsened our goal-scoring problems. The only baffling thing is that some people don't think it's baffling.
It was more to highlight the tough run of games we've had (continuing tonight), rather than looking at playing in isolation the side in 12th. I'll be worried if we're in the bottom 6 after we've played Peterborough/Forest/Hull/Blackpool etc.
Where did I say something was wrong with Vic? I was saying it's a choice between Oduor and Vic for that role. Whichever way Schopp goes it's hardly baffling or bizarre considering the options that have been available. It's either Big Vic at #9 and Woodrow dropping wide. Or Woodrow at #9 and Oduor playing as a wide forward. I see no issue giving Oduor a few games if we think he might have a future there. It's probably unfortunate that it's come at a time where his place is a necessity rather than complementing a fully fit squad. He offers something different so would a useful player in the squad for me.
