Only if the road signs are green, then the A1 is an A road. If the signs are blue then no, cos it then comes under motorway regulations

I haven't in all the years driving come close to hitting anything. But I still pay loads on insurance. I have to on the off chance I do.

Same should be of all roadworthy options and that should include bikes

Edit. Already covered by others before I reached end of thread!!!

I love the tax debate/jibe , when I'm on my bike I've got 2 cars sat at home that I pay tax for. I bet 90% of cyclists have 1 or more cars.

People need to get a grip, I've been beeped at in ridiculous situations such as riding side by side as a pair on an empty road which would probably fit 6 cars across side by side (think it's penistone road, left at top of denby dale). Also had a motorcyclist act a dick getting as close as possible and then booting it next to me whilst riding side by side on a country lane that was empty, straight with a long clear view. Just no need. Also had abuse off a bloke once who was shouting obscenities across his young son (10/11 year old) in passenger seat because he'd been inconvenienced.

I ride in the safest way possible to protect myself, so if I've moved slightly into the road it's for a genuine reason and I've learn to accept that I'll come across numpties with no respect for my safety. it's interesting how humanity can be pushed out of the way by self importance when someone is in control of a vehicle and has to turn the wheel and press the accelerator to get round a bike like it's hard work.

Pedestrians aren't 'road users', they just need to cross it.

Should be no more than 2 abreast and on narrow or busy roads should be in single file.

There has been road races on the A1 for years, they usually have taken place early on Sunday mornings. Nowadays with the amount of traffic on our roads ,folks doing more in their leisure time at weekends and weekends aint as quiet and sancrosanct as a day of rest anymore its time common sense ruled and the law makers banned them from that particular road because when all is said and done common sense towards cyclists wont be used by all drivers.

99.9% of cyclists are no problem. Unfortunately I've dropped on the bad percentage once and they went down the side of my van and caused a lot of damage, cost me a small fortune

Sorry this thread has deteriorated to cycle bashing/defending thing, but the original point was about road safety. I was with BRF and it was clear that the cyclists were in danger on the A1. When we saw one later surrounded by ambulances and police cars, looking to be in desperate state, we questioned the advisability of a race on such a road. Ride your bike by all means, but stay safe. Who was responsible for a decision to race on the A1?

There must be a reason why it's a legal requirement for vehicles to be insured but not bicycles. Wonder what it is.....

    One day

when the fuel runs out, we'll all be cycling on the A1, M1 and all the rest, either that or they convert them all to railways.....

Get out of your cars and get on your bikes and help to save the planet. As the Green Party says "There is no Planet B".

Before you all start, I'm not a "tree-hugger" I'm a scientist by training and the evidence for man-made global warming is unquestionable.
