Cyclists on the A1

I don't cycle and never have any trouble with cyclists. The vast majority seem like very good road users to me. Unsurprising really, they're vulnerable so they take care. Can't say the same about some of the car drivers who pass them.

 

I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles since I first passed my test - I've also ridden a fair few miles on a pushiron.

It seems to me that the majority of car drivers seem to think the road traffic laws apply to everyone else but them.

Examples of poor driving seen daily:

Driving too close to the vehicle in front
Speeding
Driving the wrong way down a one way street
Driving whilst under the influence
On the Phone whilst driving

Some drivers seem to think that because it's a 30/40/50/60/70 mph road that is the speed you have to do - well it isn't - it is the maximum, yes maximum that you can legally go.

Cyclists have as much right on the correct roads as anyone else - so can we drop the holier than thou attitude and give them some consideration, please! Arriving at your destination a few seconds later never hurt anyone, ever.

 

Anyone who uses a propelled mode of transport be it car bike scooter or chartiot should have as a minimum third party cover.

 

If car drivers were made to ride a bike for a few weeks they'd see their own driving differently.

 

A lot of car drivers do ride bikes.

I actually used to give a lift to work (car share scheme) to a bloke who rides a bike a lot and he commented about poor cycling on a couple of occasions.

As I've said earlier I accept that there is poor car driving out there but the reaction from cyclists to the mere suggestion that cyclists can cause problems suggests that understanding isn't both ways.

 

You can fail a driving test these days for going 20 in a 30, 30 in a 40 etc, so your point has no weight behind it at all.

 

Only if you don't keep up with traffic AND it is safe to do so

The faster one goes the less reaction time one has to react to anything.

I think my point has plenty of weight behind it.

Speed enough times and you get banned from driving - ever thought what the reason behind this is?

 

Death by slow driving? Was the motorist in the wrong lane? Did someone get frustrated and try to undertake? - So all the HGV's on a slow climb are driving dangerously on our motorways. Have a wild guess as to what causes more deaths on our roads excessively fast driving or excessively slow driving.

It is not illegal to ride two abreast - if you can't see round a corner - slow down - apart from cyclists there are other potential hazards - prior collision, horses etc

Some drivers must get confused big-time if they have to wait to overtake a roadsweeper. Slower than a bike, takes up more space than 2/3 abreast, and it's got an engine, insurance, emissions duty.........
