Because they aren't a charity. How many weeks of 8k a week would they miss out on by the end of the season, if they cancelled his contract?

Would who miss out on? WBA don't collect his wages. What are you talking about? WBA would be losing absolutely nothing, other than a player they don't want anyway.

Currently they pay the majority of his wages. If we take up the entire wage until the summer, we can then have him for nothing. So basically they want to recoup 8k a week for the next few months, in return for giving us him for NOTHING. I don't think that's too much trouble of us. We shouldn't expect a club to pay the majority of someones wage, who is playing for another team and then get him for nothing. We don't seem to care if we lose Steele.

You are totally misunderstanding the situation. They want to recoup 8k a week for the next few months?????? Steele gets paid 8k a week. If we agree to pay his full wages for the rest of the season WE WILL PAY THE 8K TO LUKE STEELE. WBA will get nothing. They just don't want to be covering part of his wages. Back to my original post, why don't they just cancel his contract. If they are letting him go for nowt in the summer, there is no way that they can make any money from this deal.

Not if there is mutual agreement to the cancellation. The parties of a contract can agree to anything they want.

We can't pay anything at the moment. Transfer window is shut. A contract free player is the only signing we could make.

If Steele wants 8k a week...

he'll need to sign for bigger team, that can afford such a wage. If he signs for one of these clubs, he might find himself in a similar situation that he is in at West Brom.

Also, Mowbray is talking rubbish. I'll be surprised if any club will pay a transfer fee for a keeper that wants 8k a week, based on a handful of games he's played for us.

West Brom basically want us to take over his contract, while keeping his registration till the end of the season, surely a compromise can be reached till the end of the season. If the player wants to sign for us permanently, he will have to rethink his wage demands.

That is exactly my point mate. If they cancel his contract then the negotiations are purely between Steele and BFC. I am sure he must realise he isn't going to get that here if he does sign. The choice is his. Play for us on lower wages or sign for another club like WBA and maybe not play again. With the FA cup semi coming up we would be in a good position to negotiate.

They can only cancel it if it is

by mutual agreement and why should Steele lose out on £8,000 a week he's signed a contract for. Whichever way you look at it, the only way they'll get him is to stump up the £8,000 a week. If Barnsley offer him £5,000 a week from now till the end of the season he stands to lose £24,000 in wages. A tough call to make for a young lad with no gauranteed income after his contract expires.
