Think pepper spray and police dogs do the trick. Sounds like Atkinson was one unarmed guy so surely could have been other ways for multiple fully trained police to deal with him.
We don't know all the facts yet so I'm reserving judgement on some of the 'eye witness' reports. In the case of tasers they are only drawn as a warning and only discharged as a last resort when all else has failed so if they are used by fully trained police officers to protect themselves or a member of the public then I think they are necessary.
Surely that should say "they're only SUPPOSED to be drawn as a warning..." It's only supposition that it happens like that every single time.
You dont know the facts and neither do I but you "assume" that he was unarmed -That may well be an assumption the police werent able to make even it he wasnt carrying a weapon. Also even someone without a weapon can be very violent and cause serious injury to others (and themselves) You mention Pepper spray as an alternative but that is not without risk either. It has also been deadly in rare cases, and concerns have been raised about a number of deaths where being pepper sprayed may have been a contributing factor. So thats not perfect either. Also someone in a violent rage will still be violent even when sprayed.
