Are you honestly saying that the football played in the season we got to the play-offs was crap and one player was responsible ? Did Hignett play every game,no.... was he dropped to the bench because he didn't want to play where Bassett played him at the beginning of the season, yes .Didn't he play some of the best football of his career under Bassett...he did. Sorry, you're right it was utter ***** having to watch us play attacking football and winning....what was I thinking of.

I didn't say winning was crap, I said the football was crap. And what has Hignett getting dropped got anything to do with? Compare the football under Bassett to the football under Wilson and there aint no comparison, which was the basis of your reply to BRF was it not? The fact is without Hignett we wouldn't have got anywhere near the play-offs... Bassetts idea of tactics was to score more than the oppostion did no matter how ugly. Fair enough, but the football was crap pal.

But there is a comparison and its we got more points and scored more goals and played quality football,BRF said we haven't played decent football to compare with 1997,in my opinion thats not true. How any BFC fan can say the football played during the play-off season was crap ,is beyond me

    Indeed

Only in football could Bristol City get rid of him when he was turning their fortunes around. He is a good manager who plays the game how we want it. I wouldn't mind him back at all. The lift and belief he would give the whole club would be astounding. He'd need some decent full backs though... they were critical to the way we played under him.

    Good answer!

The truth of the matter is that Bassett showed himself to be more effective - in so much as you have pointed our more goals and more points. I'm not arguing that - it's facts.

The quality of football we played under Danny Wilson, however, was more pure. The ball was on the deck longer, it was a shorter passing game, and it was far more attractive and exciting. Even though Bolton got promoted as Champions in 1996/97 - we were the better footballing team - much more attractive to watch. Bolton were more like the Bassett side - effective and machine like. If the 1996/97 side played the Bassett millenium side - Wilson's side would've loved to play that Bassett side, they'd football them to death - just like Ipswich Town did to us three times when Bassett was in charge. Bassett put teams together that were physical and competitive - that's why we thrived against the Shaun Goater Man City side that year, but struggled against the skills of Ipswich Town. Robbie Van Der Laan up front anyone? Effective, but not attractive.

For me - I've done with the ups and downs - yeah, it would be nice to have a shot at the playoffs at some point - but I just want to watch attractive football that keeps us safely midtable for a while.

In respect of Danny Wilson v Dave Bassett I would point out one other thing - when Wilson took over he didn't have nearly as much to work with as Bassett did, but over a period of years he built steadily. That's what we need now. Bassett had us burnt out in two seasons - and fair enough it was with a bang - but as I've said it wasn't as attractive and it isn't what we need now.
