RE: Shown up Why? Because one other person claimed to hear the programme and heard differently so he must be correct. Aye fair enough.
Gough Tottenham fan FACT "Darren Gough Dazzler the Autobiography" Page 22 (Re Glenn Hoddle) "Hoddles the reason I'm a Tottenham fan" Page 121 Picture of Gough in a Tottenham kit (no pictures of him in a Barnsley kit anywhere in the book)
I'm the same age as Gough and I still remember the promotion battle and two Ronnies rivalry. Only thing close to local rivalry that we've genuinely ever had. If someone asked me the same question I'd probably give the same answer - especialy given ronnie moore still wears that hat.
I think there might be some confusion between 'rivals' and 'teams we haven't played against much lately'
I bowled him out once when he played for Monk Bretton and I played for Poggy. Left his off stump showing, tut tut Darren.
RE: Shown up No. Shaftn Red's post does contradict you for sure ( and although I didn't hear the programme I guess you both heard what you remember you heard) but the point is that talking about Rotherham being our main rivals should not lead anyone to think that Gough is ignorant about BFC as you stated. Come on admit it - you just would have a go at Gough and other "celebrity fans" for any reason you could. Otherwise what was the purpose of your post in the first place? Personally I have always thought of Wednesday as being our main rivals even thought my first ever game was against Sheff Utd and I hate Leeds more than either of them. Sure that many others consider Rotherham to be though.
My Dad stopped going to Oakwell when they put seats on the terrace and he still thinks Grimsby Town are one of our main rivals and is always pleased to see them struggle - I don't think you'd get many Barnsley fans thinking the same. Maybe it's down to perception but when I started watching the most regular local visitors to Oakwell were Huddersfield and Sheff Utd - I'd put them above Rotherham along with Sheff Wednesday. Most people younger than you (or Darren Gough) would not consider Rotherham our main rivals.
Rotherham stand out at that time because it was when we were promoted, playing some great football, but they won the league. Chesterfield and Hudders were also thereabouts that season with Sheff utd getting relegated. The following season we renewed our rivalry in the old Div 2 we finished 6th Rotherham 7th on the same points but our goal difference was better. The fowls finished 4th 3 pts in front. There wasn`t a lot between both sides and they both produced good entertaining football.
Many Thanks An entertaining thread involving many excellent points of view and a virtuoso performance of back-pedalling by the originator. With some 50+ posts on a topic that was as meaningless, irrelevant and highly subjective as its possible to get - well done.
Dickie Bird just been on radio and he say's when he was a lad the fierce rivals were Royal Engineers and The Wanderers. He ain't got a clue who Rotherham are.
RE: Many Thanks So meaningless that you chose to contribute about half a dozen times No back pedalling by me old man - I still say that 99% of Barnsley fans younger than Darren Gough would not consider Rotherham our biggest rivals. Your choice would probably be Workington Reds or Bradford PA. Anyway - do you want this letter or not?
From an interview with him Not that Barnsley are Gough's only football interest. "Most people have a second team," he says. "I like Tottenham Hotspur, but I'm a Barnsley fan. I always believe that whoever your local team is that's who you support. If Barnsley play Tottenham, I want Barnsley to win. If Tottenham play anyone else I want Tottenham to win."
RE: 99/00 season That's the trouble with you Barnsley fans, living in the past. Surely it's today that counts. Blades average attendance in last 4 years is between 26 and 30,000, 3 managers since 1999. Finished 3rd top last year, reached play off final. This year unbeaten. Barnsley 11 managers in 12 years, last ditch stand against relegation last 2 seasons, currently bottom of league with 1 point. Relegated 5 years ago spent time in 1st div. Currently managerless. Nothing predicts behaviour like previous behaviour you and I both know if Robins gets the job it'll be "ROBINS OUT" before long. Before you deny it consider the previous 11 years.
Was that interview after we beat Chelsea and Liverpool..? it obviously wasnt fashionable at the time to say that in his book...
RE: 99/00 season (2gay) Am I sounding like Fried or whatever they call him/her ? Is Mr Gay UK from Lundwood still strutting his stuff ? There you go, Darren "Spurs" fan Gough, Dicky :'( Bird and Mr Gay Uk . Local celebrities :$
RE: Many Thanks Yes please. Drop me your address in a PM and I'll send you a SAE. In return I'll send you a map of all the away grounds you can visit. Oh and try to be a little bit calmer, we don't want you getting all upset now.
