what a load of ****** Like to see them at Man U with the Fergie hairdryer treatment... What Hassell really means is Davey was a pushover and gave them an easy ride... They should be made to sit and watch Neil Redfearn videos a man that would run through a wall for the shirt...
All those players who worshipped the ground that Davey walked on did a damned good job of getting him sacked. Davey was poor and had clearly lost the plot therefore had to go but the players, all of them, need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask "could i have done more".
RE: You're right mate Personally, I don't think that a lack of commitment is to blame for us being in this position. I've seen a lot of games under Davey and to be fair when we've had an appalling performance we've very often bounced back with a solid away draw or a good win. There's been numerous times when I've thought 'this is it for Davey' only to be suprised by the players work rate and commitment in the next game. The comments from the players reflect this. They liked him...and in the main, they played for him. The biggest problem for me was a lack of invention, planning and tactical nous. If we went a goal behind we all knew full well that we were stuffed. Games would fizzle out until Davey's 'Plan B' of loong balls to KO kicked in. Admittedly, this year has been different. The body language of the players on Saturday suggested that it was time for Davey to go. They'd given up on their boss and seemed as bewildered as the fans as to why despite us being outclassed Davey refused to change the 4-3-3 formation. We finished with three wingers in midfield for fecks sake! It doesn't bother me too much all this moping in the press. If they show as much loyalty to the next manager I'll be happy. What I'm hoping for is a manager that can get the best out of some decent players. Davey lost his job through a lack of ability, something that (some of) the players do not lack. I hope Cryne digs deep and goes for an experienced candidate then it's up to the players to do the rest.
As someone pointed out.... .... if these players were playing for me, I'd hate to have seen them if they weren't. Second half, they were like a Saturday Morning U11's side. No idea what to do.
"don't want Sergeant Major type.. not sure how players will react".... IMO its exactly whats needed SD sounds like he was pally with all the players, perhaps to much so... IMO this has been obvious and far to many players look like they are in comfort zone... And our general play we have lacked a cutting edge and been to much of a soft touch. IMO best thing that could happen to the club is for a Sgt. Major type to come in and sort out this mess, shore up the defence add bite to the midfield and play direct attacking football. We have been to frilly, fancy and soft for too long! Old school manager would be my vote
RE: As someone pointed out.... Might have been summat to do with the fact that we were inexplicably continuing with a formation which hadn't been working since the first five minutes of the game. No clearing the players of all blame, they were crap but the managers inability to adapt is one of the major reasons for his demise.
Too pally with the players? I thought Davey victimised players and didnt play them if he didnt like them.
What have we fans said that we need to think twice about?? "The gaffer will get criticised for our poor results, but if any of the fans could have seen the scenes in our dressing room with us they'd realise how much this job meant to him. They'd think twice about some of the things they've said. "The truth is that we've not been good enough – and we feel as guilty as anyone that Simon has gone." - Bobby Hassell Maybe Bobby my old fruit, you players need to think twice before going out and playing so badly for your next manager. Perhaps then we wont have so much room for criticism. You as players are lucky most of it has been levelled at the manager and not some at your rather sketchy individual performances.
RE: You're right mate My concern is that Davey was a soft touch - and as much as they might have liked him for being easy going, they didn't really fear the consequences of playing badly - so they'd turn up and give us a ***** performance one week, feel bad about it and do a bit better next time out. For me a good manager has to have a healthy balance between fear and respect - and if there is room for them being liked somewhere inbetween that's great, but all being good pals breeds complaicency and comfort. What they need is to be living with the constant knowledge that if the next ninety minutes isn't their best, they'll get torn to pieces in training and they'll probably lose their place in the team. They need to be a bit tougher than what Hassell is suggesting they are (tears in their eyes?). It's a fine line to walk, and the manager should never be hated by his players - but ultimately if he turns them into a hardened winning machine that is safe by the end of March - they'll think more of him than 'he was such a good guy' (plus they all get to keep their jobs). I'm with you all the way about Davey's tactical ability though - never convinced me - and as you say, when we went 1-0 down we were usually in trouble unless our opponents made a silly mistake. Davey never really controlled a game tactically - the best I ever saw him do was respond adequately to what was put in front on him. Very two dimentional. Couple that with this nancy boy dressing room mentality and you've got to wonder what has been keeping us up! For me, whoever goes in next, has to subject them to a beasting for the first number of weeks. Drill them hard, make them feel some pain. Find out what the endurance is. See if they have any bottle. Shake them out of this pitiful mentality that the article suggests they have.
but if any of the fans could have seen the scenes in our dressing room with us they'd realise how much this job meant to him. They'd think twice about some of the things they've said."</p> Nah Bobby, footballers and managers aren't human. They are there for internet fckwits with no comprehension of their job to abuse and comment upon with impunity.</p> Eventually we'll get what we truly deserve on here. Either the club shutting or the conference. </p>
RE: but if any of the fans could have seen the scenes in our dressing room with us they'd realise You've surpassed yourself there Dirk If fans of every team in the league got what they deserved based on what people say on message boards, there would be 92 teams in the Conference.
RE: There's a difference So Dirk are you saying fans shouldnt voice their criticisms if the manager is inept...? Serious qustion like...
Well said Dirk I personally am heartened by Bobby's comments. He's being honest and human. Can't stand all the macho stuff that's been spouted above. Anyone who doubts that players like Bobby don't give everything every match are light- thinkers (new polite term that I think I've just made up!). It's rarely the case that if we lose the players haven't tried but for some folk it has to be cos they only have black and white thinking. Not good enough/ poor tactics/ played poorly maybe. A kick up the arse? Aye, that'll do the trick.
RE: There's a difference Some people go too far but you'll find similar things being said on message boards about everyone from Rafael Benitez to Colin Todd. Not saying it's right but that's how it is and to say Barnsley fans deserve Conference football because of the harsh words of a few is laughable.
RE: You're right mate The 'too pally with the players' accusation was always cited at Ritchie. I'm not sure if it can be thrown at Davey due to the conflicting reports. The moping players comments suggest that he was their pal but what about the reports about falling out with Kozluk, the Andy Johnson thing, dropping Anderson on Saturday. There's always a lot of stuff bandied about after a sacking and some of it can be taken with a pinch of salt. For me, Davey was merely out of his depth. The biggest argument for his sacking was that he underachieving. I think he was underachieving tactically rather than motivationally. Let's also not forget that he had a number of restraints on his job. The small transfer budget and Cryne demanding a leaner squad when it was painfully obviously we were lacking cover in nearly all positions. I'm not jumping to Daveys defence here because in my opinion he should have gone at the end of last year. However, it's very easy to bring out the cliches like 'players mate' or 'lost the dressing room' etc. I think he was just out of his depth. Let's hope Cryne doesn't repeat history by appointing the up and coming dare I say it cheap option.
