    When Wilson was boss

1st season -all were behind him cos we'd just come through that FPW farce - no money, no Ponty End, turned into a very good season.</p>

2nd season - Brand new Ponty End, on the pitch it was bizarre, some great performances and some bad'uns - losing 5-0 at home to Birmingham for example, the season petered out to a non event. Neither season as I recall did anyone want Wilson sacking. Wilson moved players around that season - he tried Sheridan on the left of midfield, Liddel played deeper on occasions, looking back it seems like Wilson was planning ahead for the next season inw hich we got promoted.

    aye but

not so sure they can really can be compared in all honesty.

The clubs positioning within the league was much better under wilson, we were an established mid table club on a relative even keel.

Davey inherited a weak squad, making sweeping changes and starting from the bottom 3, with the club in debt

Par for the course for you

Why abuse someone who disagrees with you? You don't need to do it, because you of all people on here are very capable of constructing a reasoned, well thought out argument.

I remember him getting a lot of abuse at some stage. I was there, like you. I can't quite remember whether the abuse started while he was just a player under Viv or when he was player manager, but the abuse was there. At times it was terrible. However, I do not keep a diary of dates and times when players start and stop being abused.

I suppose it depends on where you sit, as a lot of the abuse comes from individuals who you may not hear if you sit more than a few yards away. I'm not saying I agree with the abuse, just that it was there.

One thing I do agree with though, the first season when he was manager was very good. And (although we didn't know it) it was to get even better. Even I can remember that.

We very nearly went down under Viv Anderson the previous year

And Wilson got absolutely no money to spend. He didn't sign a single player in his first season in charge yet turned a relegation threatened outfit into play-off contenders. We had no money, no ground (Ponty was shut) and looked in real dire straights.

Davey on the other hand has spent millions.

To be honest mate, the point you've just made is total ballacks.

I guess it's all relative - to what Wilson inherited and the fees and wages that were going around at the time.

And back to the records - it just shows what a fine line there is between success and failure.

Ever wish you had just let a thread drift of the bottom of the first page?

    Who mentioned 3 years?

I mean Hristov, Krizan etc. in the Premier pre-season as I'm sure you know. Not criticising him, just saying he spend a lot of money on players who then for whatever reason didn't get in the side.

Don't know why I've got into this again - Wilson was a great manager for us and I would be the last to criticise him.

    Hee hee

The irony. You lecture people on here all the time.

Despite that, most of the time I totally agree with you.

After 'big name manager' (John Dennis for you) Anderson left us to join his mate Robbo at Middlesborough, we were fcked. I don't think Wilson brought anyone in. Not until later on that season anyway.

    I agree

    On both counts!

No comparison at all between the 2 managers - agreed

And I have gotten into some arguments recently - agreed

I am sick of people, including me, being abused on here for having different opinions, or for simply being forgetful. I won't stand for it (where it applies to me). You are not one of them, by the way.

No one at all in that first season

Everyone who played that season was at the club when Wilson took over.

    Being abused?

    Are you for real?

I said your memory was for ****, I meant it in a half joking manner, it's hardly abuse. Stop being so touchy and grow a thicker skin.

    lol..which bit

we'd been established in the league for 15 years and seen through the worst of the mid latter / eighties in mid table mediocrity.
Wilsons starting point was not in any way shape or form comparable to Daveys.
