I do as well, though I think I prefer Tina Tyke (the dog) more than Davey as well. Whatever did happen to her?
Who off? I bet he crocked them later in the match. Vindictive Barsteward as a player as I recollect. Bit like Shez.
No, I remember well what state it was in, but it's all relative isn't it, because there were a lot of teams in our division at the time with rubbish squads, no money, poor grounds and being forced into ground redevelopments. Our attendances were poor, but I reckon our average attendance didn't put us in the bottom two or three attended teams in the division at the time, like we seem to be now (if you allow for the fact that the two recent local derbies have boosted our average significantly). I'll tell you what else Wilson didn't have. An internet message board like this for people to criticise his every move. If there had been and he had been subject to the abuse the season he was player-coach that I imagine he would have got, he may have reconsidered taking the manager's job! In those days the only forums for venting your opinion was to attend the games or the supporter's club meetings. I get the impression that most of the people who complain on here don't do either of those.
I must add something here I do not and never have wanted Davey out. I've never made calls for his head and I don't spend my time on here slagging him off. I think he's done a decent if unspectacular job of things. I know he was in a difficult situation when he took over the job and I know he did very well to keep us in this division. However, this thread was about comparing Simon Davey with Danny Wilson and in my opinion Danny Wilson did a much better job in his first 100 games. The statistics bare this out. Danny Wilson also did this without the luxury of having a financial benefactor behind him. And it is also my opinion that the style and standard of football was much better under Danny Wilson.
RE: We very nearly went down under Viv Anderson the previous year Davey may have spent a lot of money but he started with nothing and compared to the spending of other teams its peanuts. So its not ballacks. The Wilson years were great but what has Wilson done since he left us?
Sorry Jay, I'm not having a go at you per se, I just don't like statistics being used to prove a point in what is really an emotional question - i.e. which do you think was the most capable manager. I agree that the Wilson era was fantastic, although a few good things came together at once. But he was far from infallible, as some of his naivety in the transfer market shows. But certainly since that period (and taking away the gung ho season of Dave Bassett, which was breathtaking at times and puzzling at others) the current set up is the best we've had. I would go as far as to say that the current squad is probably the most talented we've ever had, player for player, although an Ashley Ward would top it off nicely, and Davey has to take some credit for that. Opinion on Davey will surely be made at the end of this season, because he's now got his full squad in place and (more or less) fit, and we're in a position where we can move onwards. If we're not going to start moving up the table now, it makes you think that something will have to change for us to do so, and that usually means the manager is left accountable. But fingers crossed the decision to give Davey time will prove to be the right one and we can continue to improve like we have been doing for the past few weeks. I reckon that the team is going to get better as the injured (and unfit) players get fitter.
Danny Wilson....or... Special agent Wilson.... as he is known to us in the know... achieved greatness in his mission of sabotage in Sheffield 6.
James Bond...pah lightweight

RE: Danny Wilson....or... Forgot about that he did make a big impact, was that the start of their troubles?
