I see both sides of the "attendances" argument, as kanecat says if gates meant success Leeds, Leicester etc would be in the prem. However having crowds of 10,000 must be a reason players like Howard wanted to leave and the likes of Phillips don't want to come. Davey is a lucky manager he was, in my opinion 45 minutes from the sack against Donny yet somehow survived. We are woeful away from home and have been since he took charge, our home form is win one lose one. I think we have reached our level, bottom half of championship with a manager who's decisions can be baffling to say the least. Oddjob anyone? Keep him and stagnate, lose him and we could capitulate. Who'd be Patrick Cryne?
Bottom half of the championship is an achievement for me The game is so much more money orientated now. For me there is isn't a great deal between a good manager and a bad manager in the majority of cases. Its about everything internally at the club being right at the time, structures, people pulling in the right direction, fan support etc. Look at a club like Wednesday. The majority of their managers have been succesful elsewhere but things don't go right when they are the manager there. Are they bad managers for that period of time or struggling within a flawed regime? Redfearn's book is interesting on Wilson. He says he wasn't particularly a better manager than any of his others, but everything just went right that season. For me Davey is doing a pretty good job. sometimes he gets tactics wrong but he also gets them right a hell of a lot without getting praise. I don't think for one second that simply bringing in someone percieved to be a better manager would propel us up the league. How do you define success? If you think Barnsley should be a Premiership team then he is not doing a good job. If you think we are doing well to stay at this level then he is doing a good job. For me we have made progress since he took over and thats the key to the future, gradula progress rather than instant success followed by rapid decline

Close Tommy Wright - £50000 Oddjob - £200000 Apart from getting both fees wrong, the point is reasonable - Andy Ritchie did not waste as much money on crap signings as Davey has. What he did look like wasting, though, was our opportunity to remain in the Championship. So given the choice I'd take Davey, failings and all.
