Give 'In America' a wide berth though. Could have been a good film, got Sam Morton in it but made too much for schmaltzy American market.

The bit where he loses all the family's money on the rifle range is good though.... And the bit where he carrys an air conditioner up ten flights of stairs only for it to break down is good too. Actually, give it a go - the Mrs will probably like it.

    Here's an interesting FACT....

Toby Krebbell, who plays Paddy's brother, brilliantly n'all, in Dead Man's Shoes - also starred in Control, fantastic film about Ian Curtis & Joy Division where he played the band's manager Rob Gretton who was also portrayed in 24 Hour Party People by guess who? Yep, Paddy Considine.

Though 24 Hr PP is a comedy compared to Control. Steve Coogan as Tony Wilson? Gimme a break....

Went to see Dead Mans Shoes in Sheffield when it had its cinematic release eight years ago.

The home video footage at the start supposedly of Richard and Anthony as kids is actually my old boss and his brother, their cousin was a producer of the film and was tasked with finding some old footage of two young lads playing.

We knew the ending before we watched the film though, sort of spoiled it.

I believe in fairies, the Easter bunny, and Keith Hill.

Haha. Seen it mate. Got it on dvd somewhere in fact. But then again, I tend to lend out dvd's only to never see them return. Perhaps I should choose my friends more wisely... :D

    Nice one.

And I'm glad nobody has spoilt the plot of the film, as I know r lass reads the forum from time to time and she's yet to see the film. Think I'll fix that for her this weekend.

    I like Toby too.

I've got the boxset of 'The Street', the Jimmy McGovern series, and Toby plays a great part in one of the episodes. But his performance in Dead Man's Shoes is something else, as is Paddy's, obviously.

Very talented lad. i remember the episode whwere he meets the mother of the child he killed and is driven to suicide by the guilt. The scenes with the mother between his flat door with the chain on or something? Very powerful stuff, great actor. I must get that stuff, love Jimmy mcGovern.

Would also recommend some more recent Ken Loach stuff such as Sweet Sixteen. Very gritty drama about a young heroin dealer who is trying to buy his Mam a bungalow by the side of a lake for when she gets out of prison. It's very funny too in parts and I thinks holds the record for most swearing with over 300 fcks and 50 cnts.

Yes, mate, that's the episode I meant. Very powerful indeed.
On that, I was quite surprised that no more series of The Street were made. Each episode was fantastic, and most of the acting talent in them have since gone on to much better things. For example, current Dr Who, Matt Smith.

Can't go too far wrong with a bit of Ken Loach either. Sweet Sixteen does ring a bell, but I'm not so sure if I've seen it considering the plot you speak of, I'd expect to have remembered it t'otherwise.

There was also a superb Ken Loach film front two or three years ago about a female gangmaster who was ****ing over illegal workers. Can't remember what it was called but really enjoyed it. Found the closing scene very disturbing though.

Life is Beautiful is absolutely stunning. However I really shouldn't have watched it again recently when we're expecting our first baby. Completely in pieces

That's right, good film. I went to a showing at the brilliant Phoenix cinema near where I live in north london, the uk's last independent cinema, I'm a 'friend of' and get unlimited access for my £70 a year. Ken did a screen talk Q&A and was inaugurated as a Fellow of the cinema that night. For all his political nouse and artistic muscle, he's the nicest and most gentle man you could hope to meet.

I liked a lot about the film but struggled with it, especially when he's hiding his boy in the camp. Have you seen 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'? It's a very difficult film too dealing with the subject but well worth watching. The two boys are amazing and the female lead, can't remember her name. Be in the right mind to watch it though, it's a heartbreaker too.
