Surely, surely this is going to end up in court? Wycombe have been well and truly cheated for playing within the rules.
"Derby County face a ‘massive’ points deduction next season" Wednesday-esque points deduction. Send them down this season
Same old EFL/FA. Total inconsistency when it comes to the rules. All points deductions should be the same as the FFP one. If the deduction would relegate a club, it should be applied immediately and the club relegated, if it doesn't then it should be applied to the following season so they actually feel the punishment. Sorry Derby, but you should be down and Wycombe should keep their place..
Any points deduction should be this season not next. It's not right they get to cheat, stay up and then get points off for a fresh season.
So what does this actually mean? Have they been fiddling how much their playing staff is worth to offset their losses(I assume they can allow some depreciation of their players value like they can with other assets?)?
If Derby are found guilty and the points deduction is applied next year, something seriously stinks even worse than usual.
Surely Reading are next, there's going to be a few more candidates. How many clubs due to Covid should be starting on minus points? Or will they give those clubs a grace period to dig themselves out of the brown stuff.
I reckon the clubs will claim even though they were living beyond their means they had plans in place to manage and COVID scuppered these plans. It’s wrong and we all know it(and so do they), but you can see the EFL sanctioning special measures for a period of time coming
This makes me angry in all kinds of ways. Why on earth should Wycombe be relegated this year when Derby have survived by cheating, and then they get a chance next season to overcome the penalty so they end up not paying any penalty at all. Same as with Wednesday and they ended up getting within 1 goal of getting away with it. Absolutely despicable.
A quick look at Derby’s accounts shows a pretty grim picture for 2017 and 2018. The operating loss in 2017 was £23m but players sales profit of £16m reduced this loss to £7m. In 2018 the position on operating loss was £31m, player sales profit was £4m and the receipt of manager compensation of £2m meant losses of £25m. This is the year the stadium sale took place resulting in a benefit of £40m resulting in a ‘profit’ of £15m. Theses accounts show related party sales of £84m (assuming this reflects the ground sale) they also show post balance sheet player costs of £18m. The accounts to 2019 have not been filed and are overdue but it does not take an accountant to work out that on like for like basis estimated losses in 2019 could be close to £50m. Over three years, despite the ground sale, that would be losses of £42m. This probably explains why the accounts have not been filed and would put them over the £39m three year loss maximum. The position will be pretty bad for 2020!
Derby's "crime" was comitted at the same time as Wednesday's so they should be punished at the same time and Rotherham be reprieved.
