Each to their own Redsnut. Don't necessarily describe his stuff as lol funny, take The Office. It's the IMO genius observational humour, the utter cringeworthyness, the diverse characters etc. that all make it. Having worked in an office environment for 15 years I can honestly say I've worked with every character.

That's probably why you liked it,must admit at the time I was in the league of gentleman camp I thought that was original and funny but not everyone likes that matter of personal opinion I suppose!

I'm going to make myself look an idiot for saying this, but I don't get it. I watched about half the first series then gave up.

Ricky Gervais plays a man with learning difficulties. A very sweet man who is sometimes on the ball enough to see the humour in what other people do. It's a sensitive portrayal I suppose, although really he's just gurning. I get that we're laughing at everybody, not just Derek, and so called 'normal' people can do much stupider things than Ricky Gervais' character, but there's no getting away from the fact that a good number of the jokes are written in order to laugh at a man with learning difficulties and what he does. I don't get the irony in that or the sophistication. Is there supposed to be any? It's just laughing at someone who finds life difficult and I thought we'd stopped doing that years ago. It's the same humour that kids use when they call someone a spaz or a Joey. It's cruel. Taking the piss out of the powerful is funny, not the weak.

I've clearly misunderstood something, but I don't know what it is. Well, you don't do you, when you misunderstand something.

For me its the opposite and I hardly ever laugh at anything Derek does unless it is a genuinely funny comment he makes and not related to his learning disability. I laugh at what all the other characters do. Tbe drunks random ********, karl pilkingtons dry wit and comments, the old folks randomness, vickys lack of common sense etc. The main thing i get from derek himself isnt humour its a feeling of hes right again and i think that works more because of his difficulties as it allows him to say them without it sounding out of place

^^^^^^ this ^^^^^^ Derek's character endears me, he's not the focal point for been laughed at, quite the opposite. It's the 'sweet' things he does that makes you just like him more and more for been kind and genuine.

Sums up how I feel about it too. It doesn't make me belly laugh in general, it's more comforting entertainment. Most of Gervais' work is to me. He portrays it as reality tv excellently, it's just cameras in a care home with Derek as the main focus.

Definitely not laughing AT someone with learning difficulties, or whatever it is that is meant to be wrong with him. As others have said, it's not the things that Derek does that are funny, it is just the situations that occur around him.

That scene at the end of the last series where he was reunited with his dad has to be one of the stand out bits of drama of ALL times, and that is saying something as this programme is not your typical high-brow bit of dramatic television. I think the portrayal of an old folks' home is superb. I don't care how accurate it is - it is just good.

Everyone in Derek performs at top level for me and if you compare it to something like the typical Saturday night dross we get these days then it is light years ahead of any of that. It's not to everyone's taste - Ricky Gervais probably puts some people off before they have even seen it - but I think it is superb. Like Extras, An Idiot Abroad and everything else he has been in or been responsible for Derek is a brilliant creation. I think we should just enjoy it while it is there, because it won't be for long

I was a sparky years ago and spent a week rewiring an old people's home, it does remind me of it, makes it even more realistic for me. Just as cunning stunt says above the characters in the office can be found up and down the country in various offices. Gervais portrays real life characters well.

    It's brilliant.

    Others have already explained why.

Kerry Godliman who plays Hannah is absolutely fantastic in it.

I can't speak highly enough about it.

The final episode of series one, and the finale in particular is definitely up there in my all time favourite moments from anything I've ever watched, film or TV. It's that good.

I'm a huge Gervais fan though, so maybe I'm biased?

But as in the rest of his works, his character isn't the one you focus on. I think that's the genius of him. He's made a few careers. And as I say, Kerry Godliman is another great find, much as Ashley Jensen was in Extras.

Karl Pilkington and Steve Merchant have done pretty well out of being associated with him as well. Not to mention Warwick Davis who has also flowered in his company.
Oh, just remembered one of my favourite bits from Idiot Abroad 3. KP is holding the reins of a big bunch of helium balloons with Warwick Davis up there, strapped to them. Brilliant KP line as he smiles upwards: " I never had a kite, me" :D
