Seats are automatically allocated now at the point of online check in, so the earlier you do that, the more likely you'll sit together. Once you've checked in online, job done, no need for speedy boarding anymore.

That may be the case, but the whole pre booking stuff is to put that fear of separation into families.... honeymoon couples etc. I hate travelling with Ryan air.

I think it's sometimes helpful to not be one of the first on the plane, I'm 6ft and having my knees pressed against the seat in front can be terrible so god knows how really tall people get on - if you're one of the last on you can pick out the seats where no-one is sitting in the one next to do and sit sideways with the armrest up. You could be a proper tw*t and do this when you first board to put any one off sitting next to you and tell anyone travelling with you to sit on the end of the row but since you have no idea of knowing whether a plane is full only a complete a*se who purposely try to reduce the capacity of the plane!

Ha ha, I've never considered myself to be particularly tall - I'm generally surrounded by people who are much taller! I'm guessing Ryanair used an average height person to work out how far apart their seats should be, and then shoved them all a little bit closer, must have been on two dozen Ryanair flights over the years and generally I've got used to not being able to move my legs, although on one occasion I just couldn't settle because of it and spent nearly all of the flight stood in the gangway or next to the galley trying unsuccessfully to pull a flight attendant (female obviously! :D)....didn't work.
